The rule of thumb is what sounds good.. and, unless it is some kind of dub shiz, try to keep every other downbeat spot on.
Also, to make up for the kick being swung you would probably want to keep other percussion very tight.
Lastly, as an alternative to swinging your kick, you could always just give it a slightly different arrangement.. which is a near equivalent to swinging it except it would be within the expected 16th note grid.
