Unless you really know what you are doing,
............

But that's pretty much the point doing a self build. If you don't when you start you pretty soon will because it's easier than you expect and empowering.

There is a one off cost in terms of a little bit of research and you don't save much money the first time but what you gain in confidence and a sense of control is immense. PC breakdown fears become a thing of the past. No individual part of a PC is particularly expensive and it become s doddle to spot which one is fucked and replace it. Job done.

It's easy to find a magazine, website, forum, friends to help with specing up and even if you are very unfortunate provided you can demonstrate you have made some effort yourself you will find peer help and support on forums far better and convenient than any manuafcturers 'helpdesk'.

How much do you want to spend? What do you want to do with it? How long do you expect it to last? Any special requirements?

In the USA (or North America), ADK are great. The main guy Scott frequents the Gearslutz forum and is really smart, friendly and knowledgeable. The computers are built solely for DAW work, not just a semi-adapted gaming machine.

These tend to get better write ups than, for example, Sweetwater's PC builds although I cannot personally give a testimonial to one or the other. YMMV.

In the UK - I dunno, left that place 10 years ago ...

I was hoping to spend no more then €1,500. Its going to be a dedicated DAW, which I will be using for tracking and running live with a powercore system. Looking for speed and reliability and enough FW USB inputs so I dont need to use hubs because its doing my head in with my lap top hubs setup! Still looking at the DARC rackmount systems as a way to save space, but I have not heard from them after sending them a query, and nobody here seems to have any opinion on thier systems!

Adk build great daw systems. Go to the site check out the specs on his systems and then go buy the parts yourself. You can pay a computer shop around $250 US to put it together and spend half the money ADK is looking for. I know because I did exactly that. Buy yourself a Antec case usually comes stock with 3 fans, Antec power supply around 700w, 3 gigs ram if xp, 4 if not, sony cd / dvd drive because they are the quietest, 2 seagate hardrives- 1 for apps and 1 for audio, cheap soundcard cuz your running external, processor, motherboard, The End. Have the guy at the shop put an extra fan in the case just to keep your processor cool while it's being built, it worth the extra few bucks.

I'm currently building a dedicated DAW using this Antec case.

http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=MTE2Nw==

in this rack

http://www.gatorcases.com/Default.aspx? ... logID=9184

Thats ~£500 but you can easily manage with something from the Antec performance 1 range and a Be-Quiet Dark Power Pro 650 for ~£200.

It will contain an ASUS P6T Deluxe Vn2 mobo, Intel i7-920 and 6GB Corsair DDR3 XMS TR3X3G1600C8 @2.67.

That's another ~£500 and actually overkill but it's what I have lying about from a gaming build. You would do as well for a DAW, maybe even better 'cos its 85W vs 135W hence cooler and quieter, with a Core Duo E8400, Biostar TPower I45 and 2Gb PC2-8500, for 'only' ~£300 (i.e. a socket 775 system as opposed to socket 1366)

I'm using an v. old Nvidia 7600GT because i have one, it does the job and it's totally silent (no fan at all) but there are more modern totally silent designs available for less than £100.

After that everything generic is cool. Samsung Spinpoint 1TB F1 HD103UJ (x2 for security) ~£150, Samsung superwritemaster CD drive, if you find you need extra quiet cooling suitable models from the Scythe Mugen or Noctua ranges are recommended.

So even allowing £250 for an OEM copy of M$ finest and a 22" monitor from LG, Dell or Samsung it'd come in more or less @ your budget. Could get something just as good for now @ under £1,000.

Off board soundcard is best and you probably already have a preference. I bought a MOTU ultralite but that's one component I wouldn't recommend. If I had my chance again I'd have bought something else. Maybe even M-Audio if I couldn't afford something in Focusrite category.

Good luck. You will not regret it. Promise

OK, to take this thread futher, let's build a rock solid audio PC that matches an 8 core Mac Pro. Rules: 1) must be custom built 2) cheaper than a Mac Pro 3) parts are bought from retailers either in the UK or Germany and they ship abroad

Remember that Mac Pro uses Quad core dual Xeon Nehalem processors and not cheaper quad core dual i7 nehalem processors and uses ECC approved RAM, which is significantly more than standard DDR. If you're doing a fair test, this should be factored in.

And you also need a Xeon to have dual processor support. As far as I know, it's not possible to build an 8 core dual CPU PC with i7 CPU's.

So this is what I am settling on!

DARC studio

CPU: Intel i7 860 2.8GHz Quad core with 8 threads
COOLING: 120mm CPU cooler and exhaust fan
MAINBOARD: Gigabyte P55
RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz Corsair
HDD1: 320GB OS drive
HDD2: 1TB Audio drive
PSU: 500W Seasonic
GPU: HD3450 ATI dual ouput silent cooling
OPTICAL: DVD R/RW
FIREWIRE: 2x Texas Instrument firewire ports
CASE: 19" Rack case with acoustic insulation
OS: Windows XP Home custom install
OS: Windows 7 Home 64bit custom install

Total = £1262 inc VAT, P&P and Google surcharge

What do you think? Value for money or not?

I'd go for Win 7 64bit Pro at least so you can use 32bit-XP-mode for better compatibility.
