Thanks be to sweet fuck we didn't have to endure god awful technical walk-throughs of U2 tracks
If you can't learn anything from watching Eno and Lanois in action on a production, whether it's U2, or anyone else, then
you shouldn't be making music IMO.

I'm not a huge U2 fan either - but their VH1 Behind The Music, along with Nirvana's 'Nevermind', Jimi Hendrix's 'Are You Experienced?' and Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' are essential viewing for anyone who wants to learn about good production and engineering values. On the other hand, if you're content with your badly mixed, badly arranged bedroom produced music and you think you're King Shit and know everything, then you don't need to bother.

Eno and Lanois are the real deal in terms of producer masterclass. The fact they produced some work with U2 is not an important consideration, they've worked with dozens of artists from many different genres and it would just as valid to watch them working with Peter Gabriel, Willie Nelson and The Neville Brothers as U2.

*yaaaawwwwwwwn*

the point is, it's not that kind of documentary.
in the slightest. at all.

the lack of U2 technical anecdotes is not an omission.

I really like the bit where Eno describes his methodology as shooting arrows into the unknown and then painting targets on what ever he hits. It's funny, moving and probably a recipe for creative satisfaction.

He's always open & ready to become interested in things other people might overlook -he has a trademark playfulness & curiosity. A very inspiring guy, he's the kind of person that could convince you that the molding bread in your frig is fascinating

and he's got a lovely studio and a sexy cat too...

thanks for posting!

The Eno documentary featured small clips of him working with Coldplay and U2.

I liked the documentary, but a couple more short clips of him working in the studio with others, which he has done plenty of, would have been interesting to some people.

It doesn't alter the fact that I enjoyed the documentary.

All I'm saying is that if you want to learn some good production and engineering techniques, then watching the VH-1 documentaries I mentioned is a good place to start. Whether you're into rock music, electronic music, or whatever, there is plenty of learn from them. Then again, some prefer to live in blissful ignorance...

Yep, this is amazing. Does anyone know what the theme tune is at the start of the programme? Another Green World is the usual Arena theme but that's at the end this time.

Love that synth, wish more developer went after different interfaces like this. So sick of the standard subtractive layout, no matter how pretty they make the knobs....

He thinks a one world government would bring forth a Utopian civilization...

Besides that little surprise, I still love his works.

Good to hear a recommendation.

Ever use Noatikl? It's a generative music app built from Koan software. Eno used Koan in his 1996 "Generative Music 1" with SSEYO Koan software release (published by SSEYO and Opal Music).
