yeah ..I wouldn't go as far as "sophist"...
utonic is great.. used to own it... I guess there are great advantages to keeping it simple/limited UI... it is a very nice plug..and sounds great! (cheap is relative)
but ... if you go through the Library presets..
there are some pre-built operator/analog racks which you can just drop in a drum-rack..pre mapped macros and all)
what I'm trying to say is ...
if you own Live you're pretty much set for electronic drums...
but not for reverbs / amp simulations..so a "must-have" it is not

Excellent point, it's not a must have. I would say a reverb most of all, and for me a couple of compressors, an eq, and a delay are. Those are basic mixing tools and you've gotta have ones that really suit your taste.

So, what kind of music are you trying to create? I assume that would help people in suggesting plugins for you. You now have an overwhelming list of plugins to check out, but I'm pretty sure a google search would have yielded the same results . . .

Also, you can most assuredly take your productions up another notch with more knowledge. Read as much as you can about music composition/recording/production etc. Where are you at musically? Do you play any traditional/non-traditional (i.e. physical/hold them in your hands) instruments? Mostly virtual instruments? What sounds are you wanting?

The last paragraph, all good points and important questions.

However, tried the  Google search "VST effects" and guess what comes up - nothing useful. Googled "VST effects Delay" and Soundtoys Echoboy didn't come up in the first 10 pages, which was as far as I took this little exercise. Maybe I'm naive but for the most part I happen to trust this forum's opinions about gear and have found out about a heck of a lot of good software on here. If someone sees one effect or technique they haven't heard or thought of and gets something out of it then a thread or comment was useful. There's no such thing as a silly question, only...

I still whole heartedly endorse getting to know Lives native plugs as well as you can before you go around willy nilly buying plugs. I guarantee you will never use half of them and get to know the full features of even less.

yes, SOME of Lives plugs have limitations and it would clearly be silly to compare lives EQ8 with Sonalksis or (a +1 from me btw) T-Racks Pultec EQ emulation...god thats one ncie EQ....I digress!

I recently pre-mastered a track for a friend and offered him three versions, one made with Ozone (which by the way if you already own you defintitely have enough to be getting on with, it is an immense bit of kit) one with T-Racks and one with Lives EQs, Multiband comp and limiter.

I found that generally speaking i just couldnt push Lives limiter as much as T-Racks which in itself was able to take mroe than Ozones loudness maximiser.

He didnt know what I'd used for what by the way i just gave him all three

Guess which he preferred?

Live's.

I have this theory about Live and its plugs in general and it is this:

It makes you work harder than you thought you would need to to get the result you wanted, but once you do, it delivers more often than not.
