Women do the bulk of the domestic work and childcare in the culture I am from. England.

So. That proves nothing other than women do most of the domestic work and child care. It is irrelevant to the lop sided and culturally acceptable way to bash men in advertising, comedy and casual conversation about their abilities to multi task, think only with their penis, withhold affection etc etc. Try making a public statement about a women having her period and how that can affect her and see what happens.

A music forum is a terrible place to discuss politics so I am leaving it there.

It is not politics. Its simply the in vogue reaction to the over swing of the pendulum. These places are great to discuss this sort of thing because you can talk to people outside of your own experience. The issue really is if you can muster the courage to admit that there may be a discovery or two that could challenge your current position.

Referencing global statistics may point out general inequality towards women that I’m not going to challenge. I think bitterness towards women from men comes from the individual women men deal with in their lives that seemingly bring the misery on themselves or have a sense of entitlement based on nothing valid. I personally don’t know any women who fit into the negative statistical data but I do know women who have gotten the advantage simply because they are women and they’ll even acknowledge that.

There was one time I had an experience that made me somewhat sympathize with the female side of the table. I was at a strip club with a group of friends and wasn’t particularly in the mood to be there. From out of the corner of my eye I saw a stripper coming towards me and I thought “Fuck, she better not be coming over here. Please approach somebody else.” But sure enough she came up to me and attempted to hard sell me on her insincere interest in me. That made me realize how it’s nice to be able to go into a bar and be left the fuck alone.

There are definitely issues of inequality that cannot be contested. I was though responding to the thought that only men are guilty of objectifying the opposite sex. It only makes sense in a male dominated environment like this forum that some cleavage will show up as a part of the conversation. However, the exact same thing happens in female dominated circles with sexual overtones intended.

On the topic of inequality, by asking how many women do the majority of childcare and domestic tasks to get a statistical answer does nothing to explain personal choices, let alone imply that the results are good or bad for women. In the end the conversation will come around to issues of recognition and ambition. These are not only issues for women, but equally for men.

I don’t think men objectifying women sexually is equal to women objectifying men sexually. It’s like a minority (for lack of a better word) trying to come up with derogatory terms for white males. They can be as creative as they want and for the most part we don’t give a shit and are unhurt. Have at it.

I think a more equal comparison would be women objectifying men financially.

Without a doubt this goes on. But as women continue to rush into trying to 'play the game like men' they are also mimicking the same attitudes as men towards alcohol, relationships, infidelity etc to the point where researchers are noticing these societal changes. Currently we have a Rugby world cup going on and the other day a fine specimen of a player had to change his shirt during the game as it had been significantly torn after a tackle. The facebook natter after this on field event among women in the 20-40 ish age group making marriage proposals and comments about his 'guns' being yum yum was significant.

Another thing of interest to me is that as I head toward my 50's I have noticed how women at a similar stage in life have either started to focus on creating this type of objectifying response intentionally for themselves or just letting themselves go. There is a socially acceptable dichotomy to criticize a general behavior yet participate in the same behavior personally.

Of course, that other forum, Gearslutz, is a misogynistic gem of a name for a recording site. It sounds more like it would be a Hells Angels chopper repair forum.

Gearslutz is full of nerd who even donn't understand how to use vsti. Maybe few musicians there who really compose music. They are rather interested in ranting about products they haven never used.

my perspective is that within my culture, the majority of social space is male dominated. For example; many newspapers, radio channels have specialist women's sections, another example... Any discussion of sexual difference based on evolution will suggest that males are the dynamic, hunter element of society based on totally hypothetical ideas on human prehistory. Objectification is of course an inevitable consequence of a visual culture. This doesn't absolve men from taking on the responsibility to manage the environment to make it better for everyone.

I agree, we should forget about sexual distinctions and focus on equal opportunities for everyone. Personal choices are made within a broader society that shapes thought and ambition, as I said my perspective is that when power and money are the prize, men hold the cards. I can't explain the disproportionate number of men in power in any other way.
