New User to Ableton & Massive. Questions on issues (vid)

Post by EssArTee4 » Tue Jan 17, 2012 1:15 am

Well this is my 1st post here, so 1st id like to say I am glad to see there is a support forum and hope I could get some help with a few issues i am having.

I figured I would make a video to help show my problems. Hopefully their are simple fixes that I am just overlooking.

I have been following some YouTube Tutorials and am working on making my 1st mix. I have only been using Ableton for about a week now so bare with me :)

I saw that you where trying to play those 2 different tracks with Massive while you still had the track called BASS armed.
What happens when you click on the little red ARM button at the far right of each track then play notes?

You have to ARM a track before you can play it. Just clicking on the track and bringing up the instrument won't change anything.

If you have only just started using live, why have you started on v 8.1.4? Why not use the latest?

Thank you very much, as i armed other tracks it allowed me to play the correct note out of massive. That was an easy solution!

Any idea why when i open Ableton it always defaults back to the current project I am working on, and when i go to click "File > New Live Set" it will not let me start a new project from scratch?

I got the software from a friend who introduced me to it but lost interest/time.

If it's a legit version (any version - Live, Lite, Suite) it can be upgraded easily by downloading the latest. There have been quite a few improvements since 8.1.

Yeah, it's because you've somehow saved your current Live project as the default live set.

The easiest thing you can do is delete all the tracks so you have an empty arrangement, then if you want, create some blank audio / midi tracks that you always want to have appear when you first open the app or go to File > New Live Set. What you're doing is creating a template. So just as an example, I have say 4 audio tracks and 4 midi tracks preloaded with some common plugins that we use. Anyway, that's entirely down to you.

NOW... once you've done this, you need to go to Live > Preferences and click on the "File Folder" tab (4th one down on the left) and click the top Save button next to "Save Current set as Default".
That'll make sure that every time you boot Live or go to File > New Live Set, you'll get the template you've just created.
That's it. Note Live only allows you to create one default template.

Personally I couldn't care less if you're using pirated software. It's got nothing to do with the 2 very minor issues you're having in this case. But always best to upgrade to the latest version.
Very best of luck with the music making.

I would add, before you go and delete all your current tracks to create a template, it's probably best do a save as so you're editing a copy of your project. Just so you don't go and ruin what you've already done.

Thanks for all the replies you guys are awesome.

I guess that leaves me with the one last question and that is why wont Massive allow me to play sounds when it is selected like shown in my video. That's the issue that's frustrating me the most.

Yeah, I noticed that, was hoping you'd figured that one. Have you tried again since arming the correct massive track (pressing record on the track) so you can hear what massive is actually outputting? (and not the signal from the bass track which is what you were hearing before)

The bump noise is obviously your system alert sound and it's probably something to do with the bass track rather than either of the other massive tracks. What are you using on that bass track? (eg Operator synth or something? ...or is it another instance of Massive?) We have massive here so I'll see if I can recreate it.

By the way... I can't see how this should affect anything, but are you playing the notes on a computer keyboard by any chance? I can hear a tapping like you're hitting computer keyboard keys? Might help us figure out what you're doing.

Worked perfect, thank you.

Yes is just tried that, same thing still :|
On all of my tracks that contain massive, armed or not, when Massive is selected in Ableton, it will not play any sound, besides the "error system alert" sound.

Yes on a computer keyboard for now.
