Bassline compression - what's the trick?

Post by sunray » Mon Feb 13, 2012 1:49 pm

Hi all.

I'm currently working on some psytrance tracks and some of them have a "night style" theme - it's still fullon, but a harder synths and bassline.
The track sound pretty cool, however I'm working since days on the bassline now and don't relly get what I want..
What I'm trying to make is this kind of "compressed" basseline, artists like Phase (http://soundcloud.com/looney-moon-recor ... plitude-ep) use. I'm pretty close to it - the kicks come through very nice, the basse rolls behind, but I'm missing this last bit of "energy".. don't really know how to describe it :D
On the type of night psy i would like to make, the bassline is verry present and powerfull, but it isn't loud - just powerfull.
Played arround with compression and EQs a lot, tried different setting on the sidechain, do multiband compression ect.. but can't find the trick.. eigther the bassline is getting to loud or it loses so much dynamic with the compression that is just sound crap..

Hope someone of you can help.. what's the trick behind the "Loony Moon Records" night psy basseline? =)
Thx!

Try a multiband comp instead of comp and eq. Another thing to try is a comp with a hp filter then eq

Are you using sidechain compression? I hear some in the track you linked to. It's no where near a deadmau5 level, but it's present.

One idea is once you get your bassline and kick EQ'd together really well (and sometimes you have to be F'n surgical) you could try routing both tracks to an audio track and then apply some mild mastering effects to both of them - compression, multiband compression (I would avoid limiting). Be careful here as you need to leave enough dynamics for mastering.

Often doing this routing and then applying equalization will help you find things. I can often find muddy spots when I put two tracks together and then boost 6db and sweep across the frequencies to find muddy/piercing/unwanted stuff. When I fund a muddy spot it tells me that I either need to take it out of A, take it out of B, or take it out of both A and B.

@Vios
See you are trying similar things ;D the bass itself really sounds like i want it to be, i just don't bring it into the mix so that it still keeps its push, but doesn't eat up all of the headroom.

@Vocane
Many thx for this magic vst 8O
nearly there.. with the comp abvoe i can nicely tune the lower pressure while keeping the upper part of bass near the original saw synth :)

this is how it sounds like (no mastering, bit more of fine runting needed and ignore the start.. everything still under consturction.. ;D ).
