i usually stay out of threads like this if i can possibly help it - but in this case i cant resist:SethAbare wrote: ... man, if this isnt the clearest case of pure psychological projection i have seen in an awfully long time .. pot/kettle/black. re-read some of what you've written in this thread, take a good hard look in the mirror
i dont expect you to come back and publicly admit this. in fact i dont even expect you to see it. but this guy mood is obviously very into what he's doing and does what he loves.
he doesnt need someone like you to come one with 6 paragraph essays about how typical he is, and how far youve "outgrown" what he does in your evolution to a higher plane of musical reality ..
re: "progressive house":
progressive is always originally used as a genre label to describe a reaction against dominant trends in a particular style of music. hence "progressive" was used to describe what genesis and king krimson and yes etc etc did in reaction to the simplistic hard rock of the 70's
they "progressed" it by adding new elements and (at least attempting) to be more creative vs the rock at the time.
this is what progressive originally meant in terms of house ... it was a blending of house with the trance idioms of the time - made it a bit darker and more repetitous - more dubby, more minimal, less epic - but the term was mainly applied to any form of 4x4 dance music that attempted to trancend the cliches.
in both case the term became bastardized by the press and general public, and in both cases copycat artists came out of the woodworks, the record labels saw a new "trend" and started signing artists based on how well they conformed to this "new sound" ...
.. a sound that originally (by definition) was meant to blow open the cliches of the former sound and create something new. but in the end it became a narrowly defined style that just became another cliche .. and eventually progressive (or "prog) house became track after track of monotonous dubby tribal sounding things that were the antithesis of what it was originally supposed to be all about.
however:
the entire time people were complaining about this .. there have been literally hundreds - if not thousands - of quality, creative 4x4 dance records released that dont really fit into those cliches or any others for that matter.
they are musically interesting. they are unique. they display a lot of skill and passion and they are (dare I say it) progressive because thats what they are doing. or at least aiming at.
anyway: identifying with / reacting against / insulting genres of music is apparently what people like to do. say the word "progressive" and it triggers off all of these associations for people that they like to sneer at, defend, or come onto internet forums and pontificate about. theres no way around it ...
btw: i listened to a few of your tracks on your site. theyre pretty cool . i especially liked the "japanese hitman" track
but you know what? its 4x4 based, chill house music that doesnt fit into any particular category.
its instrumental, dubby, tends toward the repetitious as opposed to structured, doesnt have a lot of movement, and sets a mood ... without particularly trying to go anywhere in particular. also, im guessing it falls somewhere between 125 and 130 bpm. exactly the tempo of ...
... well, i would file it under progressive house. in the exact sense of what you're coming on here and trashing this guy for.
does that offend you?

Yes I suppose I make some house, what can I say I am in love with the early 90's, especially detroit, but as has been previously quoted I dislike labling my own music, but I also know it is unrealistic for people conform to my way of thinking, so it doen't offend me if you label my music. I am still finding my way in music I agree that it's not the best, but I am still learning my craft, I really do appreciate your honest feedback, I also think you misread my intention, I am not a snob, I am just looking for an intelligent discussion with people who don't want to just sling insults.supster wrote:I was weak, I saw an oppertunity to stir up someone who was passionate, but not overly well written (not that I am either). Perhaps an equal to have a discussion with. I love talking about music, and hear other people's opinions. In the end its all a vehical for discussion. I guess made a mistake because I felt he had the ability to discuss something he was "passionate" about. Instead I get three or four people plodding back and forth about how much I suck, or progressive sucks, or whatever sucks; my bad ,SethAbare wrote: he doesnt need someone like you to come one with 6 paragraph essays about how typical he is, and how far youve "outgrown" what he does in your evolution to a higher plane of musical reality ..cheezus ...
About his music; he offered a mix, I offered a realistic opinion based on my experience in clubs, and as a DJ, if you don't like critique you shouldn't share your art, because someone is going to have something to say you don't like. I really didn't think the mix was brilliant, or well thought out, and not aimed at the punters as much as other DJs who already had his music vocabulary. I would call it "difficult for John Smith to enjoy".
You paraphrased what I said in my original post, I agree with this 100%, however progressive rock probably is best know from artists like Pink Floyd, not Genesis, which can be found in your 80s soft rock section.re: "progressive house":

100% truth, probably 10X better than I could have said it, I think we are on the same wavelength on this topic.but the term was mainly applied to any form of 4x4 dance music that attempted to trancend the cliches.

Which is exactly why I don't like the label progressive, or any other label. However that's how the human brain works; categorize things so that we can identify threat more easily.anyway: identifying with / reacting against / insulting genres of music is apparently what people like to do. say the word "progressive" and it triggers off all of these associations for people that they like to sneer at, defend, or come onto internet forums and pontificate about. theres no way around it ...

Thats funny, I feel at home with a copy of the times and a bottle of pimms, knocking out a tune on the piano. Is there a forum for that?nuperspective wrote:so you dont think music has advanced over the last 50,000 years?
interesting. clearly a guy that knows his onions. strange. someone on a complete downer over electronic music. on a forum for an electronic composition tool. i thought you would be a home with a copy of the times and a bottle of pimms. knocking out a tune on piano, writing out sheet music long hand. pontificating over how bloody computers have ruined the creative process.
