Well, this exactly
is modern about Ableton -- as every other product tries to emulate shiny real-looking surfaces complete with shadows and other gimmicks... not realising that these software products will never rival the real thing let alone come close (in terms of user experience/immediate access)...
This would make sense if we were talking about Digital Performer, Reason, or SX3, but Logic really doesn't look a bit like hardware to me?
I would like it if Live was at least interesting looking, I don't find it interesting looking at all, it's rather dull. As far as GUI saving CPU, well honestly nowadays it's not really much of a hit.
It's not a major deal, but I personally like the way Digital Performer and Reason look, but I can see being cautious considering SX3!

What are you 13 years old? Does your mom know you're using the computer?

P
I think it does -- look at all the instruments (B3, Ultrabeat....) They're all super intensive on the graphics chip.

My only wishes would be for multiple monitor support, tear-off palettes, and customizable skin colors.
Otherwise, the graphics are fantastic. If I wanted a 3-d reflective brushed-metal glowing LED look with shadows, radiosity, caustics, etc, I'd buy a hardware synth. Wasting computer power just to make something look like hardware is an absolutely ridiculous waste of resources. But I'm sure it works for some people, in the same way that rabbits and deer are mesmerized by approaching car lights.
I'm glad Ableton didn't stoop to those depths. Leave that to Logic/Cubase/etc.

Live`s GUI is a very, very good concept (simple, clear, individual ...) whitch also have a lot of space for nice improvements in the future.
Please, please, please, dont follow cubase, logic, tracktion, reason, arturia, native instruments, etc ...

Live 8_3_4 + 4b7_32+64 -Suite- Max4Live 5_1_9 _ core2DuoMacBook 2*2,16 Ghz + external FW HD _ OSX 10.6.8 _ 3G RAM _ M.H. MIO 2882 + 5.4d208 Driver _ Faderfox LV1 _ Akai MPK25 _ Logitec wheel mouse _______ PeacE will be the SOLution of LIVE

I was talking about Logic itself, not the plug ins, yeah, the plugs are pretty intense. Of course then one has to ask if Logic is hogging resources with it's graphics, why does it have about 40% more headroom on the CPU than Live?
Honestly I was as concerned as you guys are about Live getting silly looking, but about Logic when Apple bought it. They did only really minor adjustments to the GUI, thank god.

Logic kicks a ton of ass!!!
and so does LIVE... they both have there highlights. I actually don't mind the LIVE GUI I think its simple and effective. I personally could care less if each knob I tweak on software has a cute little animated shadow to go along with it. I prefer just to keep it clean and easy on the CPU.
But yes it would be very nice to have detachable windows in live, and a quick way to get to em such as Logics window sets. It is a bit strange that some apps such as logic and Fruity have round juicy looking GUI's and still get as good or better track counts compared to live.....???

Live is what it is and works great at it....i dont want it to change in functionality compared to logic....But coming from an extensive background in logic, then quiting cold turkey and switching over to live was horrible for mixing songs. When you have 50-60 audio tracks 10-20 midi tracks and 10 sends working live cant even compare to the easy layout of logic...i have my sequence in one window and mixer in another and whenever i click on a track in the sequence it brings me to the proper channel strip in the mixer window.. Maybe you A.D.D having new generation locked groove punks just dont know any better. I dont need my clip view stretched across two monitors.....

Sorry Hambone but I dont think Steinberg stooped to any low depths. Theyve been on the go a long time and have probably learned a thing or two over the past twenty years. For all SX3s excellent features I find the interface totally clutter free. I can have 40+ audio tracks running and zoom around the software at lightning speed. Its totally customiseable, dual monitor support, Dual cpu support and totally optimised for PC. It also has the nicest virtual mixer of any Daw out there. Large accurate meters etc. Very nice when mixing.
If after twenty years ABleton are still going I wonder what their gui will look like.

"...stoop to those depths" was perhaps a bit harsh...
I'm purely for functionality over glossy good looks when it comes to GUIs. It's just nice to see something simple that works. But yes, it could use improvement, in my opinion. At least give us the option to customize it, so if we want to leave it in it's simple form, we can. But, if we want tear-off palettes, multiple monitor support, etc, we can do that, too.

I personally don't like small blured fonts. There should be an option to switch to a pixel font which is easy to read in small sizes.
Also, the font color is the same in all the skins!

I finally ditched my aging CRT monitors for TFTs.
What a difference! Even the low-contrast Live skins are now useable.
I'd still like to customize the colors for on-stage use.

Me too! Live looks much better on a TFT. I would also really like to be able to tweak the colour scheme. I really like the Portolino skin but unfortunately the fonts are still in black, which is practically unreadable.
I don't get why anybody still wants their software to look like pictures of hardware, 3d and such. A picture of a knob is not a knob, it's just a picture! The real thing with Live's gui is that it's designed to hook REAL hardware to, then you don't have to look at little pictures of knobs any more.

God the simplicity of the Live GUI is one of the main selling points to me. I really am not a fan of the trompe l'oeil GUI's that most programs have (with the exception of Reason

). I think that the simple flat 2D look is far more utilitarian and soothing to work in than the whole "Wow! Those knobs look like real 1950's chicken head knobs!" Screw that stuff. Leave it how it is. Isn't it really all about the music and not refresh rates?
