Lets make a new section in the forum for DJ talk
I think it's a great idea. There are clearly at least two major steams (and maybe even more) of Live use: DJ and Production. I fall on the production side. While I enjoy reading some of the DJ posts the truth is that because of their special needs it isn't all that helpful in terms of techniques, etc. I am sure the same is true for DJ's viewing production type posts.
A split along these very different streams would help a lot in giving some professional focus to the forum. I don't see how it would hurt anything (since you could always review what ever you wanted) but it might generate a more loyal following of this forum. Truth be told while I love Live I don't find the forum all that helpful since Ihave to wade through a bunch of stuff that's not directly aimed at my interest.

I don’t think this is such a good idea, I don’t think we should banish DJs to their own forum, just because of their

I also love Live and have to wade through loads of stuff that’s not directly aimed at my main interest, so if people can start posting more pictures of naked ladies with big tits, this would at least enable me to spend less time wading through the rest of the stuff.dgkenney wrote:Truth be told while I love Live I don't find the forum all that helpful since Ihave to wade through a bunch of stuff that's not directly aimed at my interest.

Dan
as someone who uses live to dj (and have been since v1) i dont like the idea of splitting the software up into dj/producer.
combining the two together can create some amazing crossover projects... and lets be honest it doesnt take a lot to get your head around any of lives features, doesnt matter if you have come from a production background or not. (i have come from a production/musician background, but these days just find it more instantly gratifying to mix for fun)
im actually in favour of the splitting of the forums.... although at first i thought i was against it (sorry forge, but im with you on the point about expanding peoples contact with things they are not familiar with).
my only concern would be the sneering attitude which some people have.
ok djing is not the most demanding of tasks.... as i stated i do it for fun now days since i have very little time to devote to writing.
one thing i have noticed recently is the amount of noobs coming onto the site, who want to use the program for djing.... this is going to be a huge boost in revenue for ableton.
and we must give these people a chance.... just beacuse they dont know how to use a send now, how do we know they wont be making ground breaking albums in the future?
so for these reasons i say, yeah lets have a dj section, but at least let us help the noobs out and try to encourage them to use the program to its potential and not just cheat-djing.

MBP 2.4 & a shit load of Faderfoxes!
As a drumming DJ myself, I hope nobody takes my anti-drumming anti-DJ sarcasm seriously!
Good points here, though. Everyone's gotta start somewhere. Making a noob section isn't the answer, in my opinion. I'm personally tired of spoon-feeding what little information and knowledge I have to those who can't be bothered to do a little fundamental manual reading, Googling, research, etc on their own before asking basic questions.
I quite enjoy helping out those who make an effort, but I don't have time to waste answering questions on a kindergarten deejay forum.
Do your homework, then come here armed with intelligent questions pertaining to music and Live. Then we all benefit from being on the same forum, without having to endure explaining the difference between a track and a scene, or sifting through yet another bleeding-heart 'save the planet' debate, to find some useful info.

I’d like to take the opportunity to second RePeter as our nominated DJ noob helper and mentor in the proposed new DJ section. I’d also like to congratulate him on the modest and low-key manner in which he self nominated himself for the position. I’m sure he’ll receive a third nomination shortly from another forum member to confirm his proposed position*.
To be serious for a moment I really don’t think that a DJ section is the answer unless the proportion of Live users using Live for just DJing significantly rises above it’s current level.
I think it’s far more interesting to have it all in the general section, OK so we end up with regularly repeating questions or simple questions that could be answered by just looking in the manual, but it’s not hard to skip them is it.

*just kidding around RePeter no offence intended, well this is the general forum after all.

I used to think some specialized sections would be cool. Now I am thinking I like it as one big gob. It keeps me looking at things I might not ever look at. I am in favor of a FAQ for each group as a sticky though.
They should activate the user groups for those that want it.

3ghz Pentium 4 (Prescott), XP Sp2, 1gig Ram, Dual Monitor with Matrox Millenium, MOTU Traveler, Event EZ8 Adat card. Also IBM THinkpad t40 1.6 1 gig ram
i think this program blurs the distinction between producing and DJing enough that theres no reason for seperate forums.
i do think the one forum this needs is a seperate music forum to share/promo work. they did say we were getting one, dunno when.

Speaking as someone who has only ever used live for production, but increasingly playing about with trying to get a live set together I find it helpful that the forum is shared because every now and then I'll click on a DJ thread and learn something from it. If it was seperate I might not ever look at it.
And also alot of the Dj oriented functions and techniques are increasingly useful for writing - one of the best things about live is being able to jam as you write using the session view.
