Beat repeat to create random breaks

Post by davy » Wed Oct 26, 2005 6:32 am

This isn't a big one, but since BR is still confusing some people, here's a little tip to get some good sounding breaks. Before this one I was always trying to do freaky stuff with br. It's like supatrigga but with a non-fixed grid and without the reverse.

- Use INS mode. This way when our break is playing, the original signal isn't coming throug.
- Set variation to a value between 3 or 6 (can be more or less, depending on how mad you want your breaks). This will allow beat repeat to change the grid size, so we won't have always, 1/4 or 1/6 breaks or so.
- Set gate to the length of the interval.
- Give chance a value depending on how many breaks you want. 50-75% of the time seems nice (depending on the other settings).

To get the best results, give Interval a value of 1/2 and grid 1/4.

You can run it like this on your beats to get some different groove while composing. I like it when playing guitar so I won't always get the same beat.

this might be obvious:
- turn chance to 0%
- set interval pretty low, (i just go to lowest, 32nd)
- use "insert" mode

now, every time you click the "repeat" button, you will get a loop (the length of "grid") that doesn't stop until you hit "repeat" again.

small grid with max variation will give you whacky autechre fills that only cut in the moment you hit "repeat" and will quit when you hit repeat again (like a toggle)

no variation and a normal grid (say, 1/4) and you get auto-loops that sound pretty bangin' when used on techno beats.
