G4 vs intel macs

Why get a dodgy mobile CPU when you can just go slightly thicker and get
a real desktop CPU in one of those desktop replacement type laptops.

I have a dual 400 G-4 with OS-X and it works perfect every day. I can not run Logic 7 on it so good... But all the PC's my friends have from that time are already in the trash. Nothing there is compatible with today's stuff, and they can not even surf the net

. My Lappy is a 2.13 Centrino and I will be happy when I will have that speed with OS-X.

Because the Centrino outperforms most AMD and P4 chips. Why get a hot desktop CPU with old technology when you can use a chip that runs cool, and will likely last longer?

i'm actually in the market for a laptop, solely to run Ableton for djing / producing purposes. I'mve been really wishy washy about what to go with...a g4 Powerbook or a non-Apple laptop. i have about $2000 grand to spend on it and am not very knowledgable about notebooks. Anyone have any non-Apple suggestions that would fit under a $2000 cap that would rival a Powerbook? Thanks for any help. [/i]

why buy an intel mac when in 2039 there will be flux capicitor intel mac pentium 83 laptops coming out? I can't wait for those. I hear they will over heat a little(melting down entire cities). and of course ableton won't comment on whether they plan on making their software compatible with them. they also won't say anything about whether they will continue optomising old out of date stuff like those shi**y intel macs of the past.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 9200 with a 2.0ghz centrino about 6 months ago and I couldn't be happier.

I have 2 G4 Towers (350 & 1.25ghz) and the Dell just seems to out do them on every level (I've been a Mac guy for years so I dont say this lightly)

I teach at the SAE and use it everyday in class, it never seems to wig out or crash. With Live, Pro Tools, NI Komplete and Reason I've had nothing but stability and power. The best bit of advice i can give you is, dont rush your decision. Search the forums of all programs you wish to run and ask as many questions as possible. i did about 3 months of research before I finally settled on my choice.

thanks for the input. I've been doing a lot of research lately, its just hard to make sense of it all. Everyone seems to suggest a different laptop and say negative things about the one I was previously looking at. I think I may just bite the bullit and go with the 15 inch Powerbook and soup up the RAMM to 2 Gigs. It seems to be industry standard for most professional djs who use live, thats a good enough indicator to me that an Apple will work well.

anyone know anything about how the top of the line Vaio laptops square off against the Powerbooks? The Vaio's seem to be pretty good in terms of their specs...

Economicly speaking, if you want a pc as tight as a mac, you need to work so much on optimising the system personaly, that you could ern enough cash for a mac if you spent that time at your day job instead. Not forgeting if you want powered FW ports, optical/high quality internal soundcard, and all that stuf that comes standard on mac, you have to pay extra $$$! And again aditional software/driver problems/work, that it brings with it!

Thats why I belive macs are worth it. Plug and play.

After reading a lot of posts here, I desided to get a centrino lappy in august. (Upgrading from my G4 lappy @800mhz.) I still havent got it like I want. (it want recognise all my drivers, etc etc etc x1000) And finaly now im sellling it, and getting an imac, so I can get on working! Im way to un-technical to run a windows system. I cant rely on others to run my system!

I was hoping XP was a bit less stoneage (

), but I was wrong. Maybe the new Vista would do the trick. But you still have the hardware isue on pcs, that they all are different, thus makes problems, needs upgrades, etc etc.

Most people like em though. They are cheaper

I can live with a slower prosessor. The G5 aint that much behind anyway! Though if you need a laptop, I wouldnt get the G4, its too slow. Get a centrino. Im geting a G5 imac desktop, and will still use my old G4 laptop for gigs. Its easy to trancfer projects between them, and ill just bounch down tracks before I trancefer to the G4 laptop. When the intel/mac comes along, I will replace it with my new iMac. It is estimated at the marked around the summer 2007, so its no use in waiting for that!!

Hope this clearifies your decitions

Dont listen to that "professional" talk about macs, its bullshit. Its like what car is most professional! (toyota or volvo?) And if that concerns you, youd might be better of not doing music at all.

Its orange and apples.

I recomend you look at all the cpu tests thats have been/are being done here, before you get a mac. Browse the tread: LIVE FIVE PERFORMANCE TEST

Centrinos are by far recomend from speed, noise, heat, and slimness of the lappies.

Then again, I prefer the all around package of a mac.
