One reason I guess is that this would be updatable hardware. Kind of like a computer, huh? I remember Steinberg was trying some crap like that, called "system link" (users called it vaporlink), which was supposed to use one lightpipe channel to link machines. Whatever.
I want all this stuff to work NATIVE on my machine. The only hardware I want is controllers and I/O. Computers and software are expensive and buggy enough, without adding a second one to the mix (and by NI? I'm sure it'll run flawlessly. Not.).
