important infos for peoples with performance issue

Post by radeon » Fri Feb 03, 2006 2:12 pm

I had the big problems so I spend this week to try many solutions. It happen because I see Ableton live use up to 900mb of ram with no vst or fx and only seven audio track play. Not good so I wonder and think. I use two hard drives the system and recordings drive. My recordings drive was a 150gb maxtor sata drive which I use on my mac. I also having 1.5gb ram. With the setup I have big problems in performance. Could not finish a track without audio drop outs
So I go and buy one more gig of ram BUT also I buy another hard drive. This time a Westernn digital 250gb. I install the items BUT I partition the new drive for three partitions. This was important because to seek all over a 250gb drive when there is a lot of infos on it can cause problem. So I partition to three sections.,I load up last session I having problems
NOW Ableton use a much better 150mb of ram AND SO FAR NO AUDIO DROP OUT :P
SO if your drive is even half full with Ableton Live you can get the problems. It also seem 1.5g Ram was not enough??? but it is looking so much and it looking like my 150gb other recording drive that has 50gb space was having the problems. I thinking that more ram and little used drive seem to work much better for Ableton live.

SO Ableton Headquarter. It is time you people making a sticky about what users should do with hard drive. This is easy things to fix for all people but yes it cost a little money BUT IS BETTER THAN THE STRESSINGS 8O Ableton must provide better infos to your customers and take idea from how digidesign heelp customer with set up issues and performace things. They have sticky not about Camp digidesign but sticky for all users. All you have is about new artist and silly remix of coldcut USELESS INFOS FOR PEOPLE . I spend six month with disaster performance and have to fix everythings myselves with no help from Ableton. I think Ableton you are afraid to tell the truth but if you did the people with probelms here might not be the angry ones so many times.

To peoples with probelms. Try a little more ram and you MUST record on to another drive that is not nearly full and not thyree quarter full. If it is big drive partition it to easy size. THINK! do you need to record on full 200gb 100gb at one time? No, Partition to small size as possibbles. I buy 250 gb because the shop only have this size. I wanted 80gb and was to partition in half and only use 40gb for my recording drive. No song I write ever need so much as 40gb. Once I finish the song I copy to my backup drive then delete from the recording drive to have fresh drive.

So at this time I can play the song I hope this not to change and I get big performance bad.

It would be useful if you posted more details about the model of computer you are running on - as you have discovered not all hardware is created equal.

I really think you are being too hard on Ableton as developers - nowhere (that I've found) do they guarantee you any level of performance. Maybe as a computer engineer its obvious to me that performance suffers as a hard disk approaches capacity, more RAM always increases performance (to some extent) but to compare Ableton with Digidesign is unfair. Digidesign have a support budget bigger than Abletons entire business and more support techs than the whole of Ableton team..

Also bear in mind that Digidesign are VERY particular about what hardware you run on, what OS version and what patches you have - there is a lot of sense in this and if you want the very best performance - as well as the changes you've had success with you should consider running a music only OS install, and keep it only for that. Never be the first to install service packs or patches and research the impact of those you do. It is no conincidence that Digidesign in particular are 3+ months behind the release of OS updates when certifying their products.

Anyway good to hear you solved your particular issue..

this is funny, ive just had a similar experience. I was having similar problems but then recently I accidentally deleted a system file from my computer and ended up not even being able to boot in safe mode. I reinstalled windows & hey presto Live 5 works like a dream, boots MUCH faster, seems more stable & less cpu intensive.
I think the hard drive issue is a serious one. Its made a massive difference to me, it does seem the more space you have the better.

Funny you said that. Thats exactly what happened. I im not sure if I get more performance out of using speedswitch. But it certainly makes the system more stable.

Before I had problems with losing the wordclock connection with my 01X.
That means of course long audiodropouts. But after this program installed its all good.

I not to hard on Ableton. I only meaning the sticky on the forum. Tell me why Ableton could never post the sticky with a system that workings good for them?? Digideesign only sticky little info but so they are nice people to help a little Ableton does not we are leaving to fix things our selfs but with no ideas to where to start.

So I maybe speak to soon. The session with new drive and more ram playing back good when I post original. Then some hour after it was back to audio drop outs. OS my new ram and drive maybe not the answer but I wait to try some PC testings now. (I have dual 2gig G5 and P4 3gig).
I watch activity meter and very weird things happening. The more the song play th emore ram is using so by the end of song the ram live using is up to 900mb. I am certain this is the probolem. Liv eis very bad at using cp resources and it feel like it forget to let go of ram???. It also constant spike shoooting so high for no reason. (I never putting samples in ram)

I am very sad now and become tired of try to fix this software so to use as Daw i never feel so bad to use a softwares like live. This company also dont take problems serious. I cannot affording to buy new things. I already buy a G5 4 months past because I read this forum and believe the Mac users who say no problem    this is so a lie
I come back to testings some more if it still happen tomorrow I maybe give up on the Live softwares??.
Version 5 never working for me on PC P4 a G5 Dual 2gig and 2 G4 powerbooks. Live having performance issue on all of them!!!!

Of no one believing me I have these three computers I can capture the photo of them together to post. I thinking som epoeples thinking I am liars

Well. No.

But I had some spike action on version 4. Don't remember if it was speedswitch that fixed that. It's possible. :)

I think Ableton you are afraid to tell the truth but if you did the people with probelms here might not be the angry ones so many times.

i totally agree with this. more than likely ableton knows much more about how the software performs under different conditions and what needs to be done to avoid certain performance problems than they publicize.

which is practically nothing. as much as we (people that have been aware or involved with the board for a long time) know that they listen to feature requests and implement the best ones ....

i think its equally fair to say that there is almost complete silence on just about everything else. fthe reputation for being responsive to and involved with the customers is totally based on those feature implementations.

it doesnt take a staff of 100 people to post performance guidelines and known conflicts. it takes a willingness to recognize that some issues are common ones, see that its in thier best interest to help people with them, and make it a policy to review and post them on a regular basis.

if anyone disagrees with this please link us to the forum posts where anyone on thier staff came forward with specific, helpful (non-obvious) recommendations that went beyond what they state in official product specs

what did you buy 2.5gigs of ram for if you're dead set against loading samples into ram?

i know you're having problems with live hogging it. but even if it is using 900mb now, you've still got probably a whole G of ram that's just sitting there while you have performance problems. you should at least give it a try

I add more ram because 1.5gig was not enough. I add the ram when I put in the new drive. yes I never putting samples to ram I only say this because some peoples say put samples in ram when I speak of audio drop outs.

I am to do more testtings today to see my prolem

Ableton are pissing alot of people off now...
I think most of us have had enough of bug testing their piece of shit program for them, wasting 6 months of our time which should be spent making tunes.
Paying for live 5 ...what a joke they should be paying us!!!
Version 5 (Absolute pathetic) All magazines should have slated them for the quality of this release.Unacceptable selling that to people and it should not be allowed.
5.0.1 (Shit)
5.0.2 (Shit)
5.0.3 (Still too many bugs) but I have had to wait until this version to get something thats usable for my hard earned money.
Ableton ..Spend some of the money you've made tightarses and get some new support technicians, programmers and bugtesters.(Your techsupport is well funny...I may as well be emailing vegetables)
Oh yeah and make sure your program works before selling it to people next time.
We ain't got time for this bullshit ...
