Turntable style push and pull controls at last...

Post by Hedroom » Mon Feb 13, 2006 12:47 pm

On my lemur!

Set up an interface on my lemur which gives my a pitch fader, a fine pitch fader and two "push" and "pull" controls.

It makes mixing into decks dead easy!

My pitch fader has a range of 97 "MIDI points", fine pitch has 10 and my push and pull pads temporarily add 5 points whilst they're held down.

You just need to set min and max values (pref about 8 bpm apart) in the MIDImap mode of Ableton before mixing the tune.

Now as soon as the lemur chucks out 14bit MIDI or Ableton supports OSC then I won't even have to set min and max value in live as it will allow me to have a huge range at high resolution.

In the meantime though this is a great solution.

Max/MSP heads : This is the easiest thing in the world to program. You can set up a patch to do this with ANY MIDI controller :D

yeah, doing it with modular software is reaaaally easy - and liberating!.

In the past I have even triggered envelopes with push/pull ("nudge"/"brake")-buttons for even more natural sounding tempo adjustments.
Now as soon as the lemur chucks out 14bit MIDI or Ableton supports OSC then I won't even have to set min and max value in live as it will allow me to have a huge range at high resolution.
Doesn't it provide pitch-bend info? That's 14bit, iirc? Also, can't you just do simple osc->midi conversion in max?

Yep the lemur provides an ASDR envelope on the push and pull pads too.

Doh... of course I could do the OSC-MIDI converion in Max, good thinking. And yes, come to think of it, the lemur prob does do 14bit pitch bend. I am new to both Max and the lemur.

Cheers for the idea! :D

Machinate, can I pick your brains here for a sec (and I know I'm being a bit lazy here and should do the research myself):

If I need to scale the OSC mesage to 0-127 for MIDI, what's the range of values for 14 bit MIDI? Is it 0-16383 ?

Wow!

Just had a little tweak, and now I can set a range of 60bpm to 200 bpm at super-high precision. Also, now that the range i fixed, I can plug an expression into the lemur which gives me an accurate bpm readout!

Cheers buddy.

Stallos:

It's v easy to write a little patch in pd or max/msp or something to let you do it with ANY controller tho.

how can that be done then, if its soooooo easy and people are sooooo eager to have this Patch how come there isn't one yet?

Please give me a pull push function and I'll praise you everytime I touch my Ableton...

Is it possible to do this with an Evolution UC-33e controller? Maybe by giving pitch bend assignments to the FastForward and Rewind Buttons or something? Bare with me guys I am new to midi and am only taking my first electronic music class in school right now. Any help would be appreciated though thanks.

What kind of modular midi environment do you have? EnergyXT? Bidule, Reaktor? PD? Max/msp? SuperCollider? you'll need at least one to do it.

DJSK, see the message I just posted for John - you need special software.

PD is the way to go, it's great, and free too!

I used Plogue Bidule to set this up for Evolution UC33e last summer, its even easier in PD though.
If it ain't broke, don't try to mix it!
