I hope you understand why i said and assumed what I did, and dont consider me a prick for my condesent. I rarely listen to a boards of canada album all the way through, but I do like the textures they create...its a different kind of appreciation not at all a 'musical' one....but in theme with the things I've said previously, if boards of canada started suing their fans for even more financial gain I'd damn them to hell.

Frankly I think Nirvana was just plain bad...I really can't even begin to understand how anyone anywhere could find them great in any way. None of the members are that good at what they do, and their songs are almost all boring as hell. They...just...suck.err_fatale wrote:dude NIRVANA kicked ass! A lot of NEVERMIND's success was the engineering and production, but they were still a great rock band. IMH fucking O
I'll also second Boards of Canada and RDJ. Both have some good material, but neither are really above average to me. Also, BoC isn't really dissonant at all.

Ropey,
I don't have time but it doesn't matter because I don't have any kind of in-depth, insightful, or uber articulate argument to layout for you.
Its my opinion. I do think he is talented, and some of his music I quite enjoy but I don't really understand or agree with the exalted and godlike status some people (not necessarily you) give to him. Given this I am inclined to think he is somewhat over-rated and while talented, is not the "earl" of electronica or "ambassador" of avant garde like other people do.
Maybe I've been biased ever since I bought drukqs, which I thought pretty much sucked and was a waste of my money.
While I disagree with the guy who feels BoC is overrated I am not inclined to argue with him because I realize that it is his opinion. I enjoy Boards of Canada, and I love Autechre.
See, one day I was listening to autechre's track "lentic catachresis", from confeld, while shoveling my driveway in the bitter cold and the track took me somewhere, I understood, I could relate, the track spoke to me. Maybe I've had similar experiences while listening to Dawn Chorus, julie and candy, or the devil is in the details from geogaddi.
Maybe one warm summer day I was walking downtown in front of the pratt library, the sun was setting, and I had the track Synkro, by Luomo on in the headphones and everything was beautiful, pristine, perfect, like a dream. And though I can't remember the date, time, or what I was doing there, I remember that track and that warm feeling. Listening to it (I am now as a matter of fact) takes me back there, just like lentic catachresis takes me back to that cold, sterile day in the snow.
Aphex Twins work has never moved me or spoke to me in such a way, so as a result I think he is a little over rated. Keyword "I". So while I can not argue music theory I do know what moves me and thats enough for me.
Sorry to bore you man.
peace

No dude, I'm totally serious. ok, maybe I was being subjective when I said I didn't argue with the guy about BoC because of opinions, but I was being 100% serious about why I feel Aphex is over rated.
See, I totally lack the ability to debate music theory, so I go with what moves me. Maybe you'd like to elaborate on why you disagree with my opinion on aphex, I'd be glad to read it - who knows you may even change my mind.

do I disagree with you ? I just wanted you to elaborate, put a little meat on the bones of your statement....something for us to chew on, for better or worse.
well, why do I think he's so great? Because he's subversive. because of selected ambient works II. because of psylocybin. because of melodies from mars. because of snare rushes. because of melodies in chaos.

like smu, i like BoC and Autechre and if we go way back LFO
tell me this, what was the last great RDJ record? what did he 'innovate' and why is he an electronic music 'god'?
his output is sketchy to say the least, bubblebath was ok, drukgysrs was shite from start to finish and analord sounds like a man who has been found out.
his live shows (if he bothers to turn up) are shit and coming from way down south he has a funny accent.
so i put it to you - why is he rated?
convince me

EDIT: selected ambient is a reasonably good album, but if taken in context of the time - it was nothing special R&S were putting out stuff that was as good if not better.

the whole warp catalogue has been influenced by him, well practically....if he hasnt influenced someone he has set the bar that they must reach with their own ideas, and so he has probably pushed some developments in this way if he hasnt directly influenced them. His percussive style really caught on, and electronic music has become diluted with snare rushes and similar stuff.
really to establish what's so great about him, you need to look at the chronology of developments. the worlds greatest cliches were something special before they caught on and became common place. Its easy to forget who started something when every tom-dick-and-harry adopts it almost straight away......anyways this is by no means the thorough essay you have asked for.....in all fairness, the onnus is on you to elaborate on why he is over-rated...since no one here has been saying he's great, just you saying he's over-rated and when asked why, either saying 'because i just dont like him' or 'well why's he so great then' isnt really a good enough answer.......
maybe you just dont like him, thats fair enough....but saying he's over rated? you have got to devlop that comment , and challenging others to say why he's so good.....is just a cop out
edit: you said he's waaaaaaaay over rated, so you convince us why. Hell, you dont even have to convince us....just tell us why thats what you believe.
