I think that's simply not true. Many great electronic artists (including other warp artists) were evolving independently of RDJ. And I can't really think of any major innovations he made. Most elements of his percussive style were in use well before he came around. To get right down to it, most of his music is simply sub par. Non of his early albums (select ambient 1 and 2, I Care Because...) really do much for me, and they weren't really that unique either. The RDJ album is definitely a good album, but I think it's the only thing he's done that really stands out. So I think he's overrated because he just plain isn't that amazing of an artist. That so many artists claim to be influenced by him only supports this to me.RopeyPunter wrote:if he hasnt influenced someone he has set the bar that they must reach with their own ideas, and so he has probably pushed some developments in this way if he hasnt directly influenced them.

Speaking of squarepusher, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought he was doing that broken stuttering style of percussion long before Aphex was?
If u want to give credits to someone who cutted up beats and melodies, u must give it to the people of radiophonic bbc.
And ofcourse Chep Nunez...but Square pusher?

Squarepusher's Go Plastic has what I've never heard in an Aphex track: Boogie factor.
Seriously. It's groovey... that's why it's better.

Someone on this thread said the beatles were over-rated.
RDJ aside, I want to know how possibly the best rock song writing band of all time is over-rated. And I'd like to know if someone who claims this has ever tried writing a song with live instruments. I'm guessing not.
No offense to anyone who disagrees, but I find this simply absurd.

ps. I don't like many of RDJ's later works, but I think he earned his reputation.
Also, I personally think Pearl Jam's later albums are under-rated. But that's just me. flame on.

My definition of over-rated, which I'm sure most of you will agree with:
Bands/Artists who are greatly admired/hyped/critically lauded, but who I don't think are deserving.
Sales or popularity are not a deciding factor though... acts like Britney Spears/Aguilera/All boybands/girlbands etc, cannot really be called over-rated, as they were never really critically rated in the first place... just by the record buying sheep.
Bands/Artists I think are over-rated at the moment:
Arctic Monkeys
Franz Ferdinand
Kasabian
Bloc Party
The Strokes
Coldplay
90's onward U2
It's harder to judge with older 'classic' bands, because although I may not like them, I can see the incluence they have had on many bands that I do like... and I can appreciate that. For instance, I don't like the Rolling stones or the Who, but I don't think they are over-rated - they did their thing and they did it well, it's just not my cup of tea

I'm pretty much with you there. Bands like Coldplay... well they just sold out. There first album actually wasn't that bad, it showed potential that they never came close to achieving. Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes are all what I would call over-rated. They get a "hype" and "buzz" surrounding them, and everybody feels that they have to say they like them or they won't be considered cool....I.AM.AN.EXIT wrote:My definition of over-rated, which I'm sure most of you will agree with:

The bands that are being hyped today in this sort of music seem to be of a much more derivative nature then what was being hyped 10 years ago. Which means that a lot more bands are over-rated these days! As an Australian, I think the most over-rated bands in our country in the last few years have been Jet and The Vines. I think they're both terrible rip-offs of successful artists of yesteryear. Have any of you non-Australians heard of either band?
Oh and don't get me started on U2 in the last ten years... yuk.

I don't think all of the Beatles' hits are as incredible as they're made out to be. I think the Smiths wrote songs that make Beatles songs seem like they were written by a bunch of retarded 5 year olds with no arms.glitchrock-buddha wrote:Someone on this thread said the beatles were over-rated.

rubbish, as stated before there were other artists on warp before RDJ showed up who were pushing the envelope (LFO, Black Dog, Sweet Exorcist even).the whole warp catalogue has been influenced by him, well practically
you're probably right tho, i dont particularly like his music therfore i fail to see him as an electronic pionner. But, you can prety much 'slag' everyone in the warp/rephlex genre off and no one bats an eyelid - but dare to say RDJ is not a pioneer nor has he been particularly inventive or influential and woe betide the rath rained down upon you by his fans.
as i said - what exactly did he 'invent'? stuttering breaks? nope, glacial melodies? nope speaker destroying basslines? nope
you're right it is hard to remember who started it all when we're surrounded by so much dross but what sets him appart for all the adulation? what has he done for you lately?
It shows the power of the man that he can release the ludicrously expensive and, on the whole, utter shite analord series and people still lap it up.
but hey, thats my opinion - yours is different - thats what makes the world go round i suppose

Like any great band, their hits are not what you should be measuring them by. Have you listened to The White Album? Sgt. Peppers? An artists calibre can often be better measured by the songs that weren't hits then the ones that were...noisetonepause wrote:I don't think all of the Beatles' hits are as incredible as they're made out to be. A bunch of retarded 5 yr olds with no arms.... this is a matter of musical history. The Beatles MADE history. They wrote songs that were not only innovative and new at the time, but stand up to the test of time, 30-40 years on. Next you are going to accuse Jimi Hendrix of being an over-rated guitarist!
