Is this bad

I've been using my neighbours wireless connection for the last 3 or 4 months. he blocked my computer at one point but he's got the same router as i used to use and he's not changed the standard password so it was just a case of going in and unblocking. I've even forwarded the ports on his router for my soulseek.

Well, with my internet addiction - it was a great "gift" from my neighbours when we moved house. I'd hook up to someone elses ADSL until my own was installed. Great stuff!

...by the way - why the hell does it take "up to three weeks" to get an ADSL connection moved/installed? I mean - it's not like they're actually digging up cable and physically moving it?

i think if you use open connections then at some point

I have a D-Link Wireless router, but it's only being used for the Slingbox now.

So, let me get this right... if I have WEP enabled, with a custom 64bit encryption key on both the router and wireless bridge... I should be secure?

Disable broadcasting and use mac address filtering on top of that and you'r solid.

I use MAC addrress filtering where only the machines I designate can use the router. Does this really lock everything else out?

You know, I am surprised at some of the replies.
Personally, I think that if you want to use something, you should be prepared to pay for it.
When someone comes on here with a cracked version of Ableton, you same guys flame them.
I guess if you spend all day hating Bush, your morals are beyond reproach

I think it's cool to wardrive/squat people's connections. I do it when out of town, always happy to find a connection by my place before I got hooked up. I'd share mine if only not everyone had also a 20Mb connection.
The only thing though, make sure that you don't disrupt their network, at least.

When i'm at hotels whilst travelling, i look for flaws in how their internet system works and if i dont have to go out of my way to do something illegal then i will exploit that weakness to its full potential. The hotels make a killing as it is.

While I was in the phillipines, the office i was setting up didnt have a phone line yet, so i found a building adjacent to ours (on the 10th floor) that had a small wifi signal.. add a pringles can around my wifi card, ethernet into the office LAN and voila.. the whole office had internet.

No guilt at all, but when I do use it I try not to leech bandwidth since obviously I'm just in dire need to fulfil my internet addiction, i keep things down to browsing the ableton forum, msn and news websites when breaching wifi.

i just used a network sniffer on the connection, and its has given me all his passwords etc for various sites, i feel very bad now for doing this....The main reason for hoovering his connection on the first place, is that i have just moved into a new flat and the BT isnt live yet......oh well a few more days of free soulseek.....

I totally agree with you Fraq!!! The double standards that you find in this forum here sometimes is staggering!!! As you say, anyone who comes here claiming to use a crack of Ableton is given a hard time, yet condoning illegal use of WiFi basically still boils down to stealing. I also find it shameful that some people think it is OK to exploit someone's ignorance or inability to employ proper security measures in their WiFi setup. Just because someone leaves their front door open still doesn't mean you can go in their house and steal their possessions.
