it's kind of a surreal experience for me to be on this forum of all forums trying to validate " audio slicing and mapping" as a viable feature, if the props took out the dr rex from reason tomorrow people would be jumping out of planes.
I love you folks never the less though, now it's time for pancakes
...no offence, but I can see why Ableton doesn't include a dedicated slicer, as there are already a lot of them out there which can be loaded as a VSTi and also because of the fact that you can do all the tasks with Live already. It's basically about cutting a loop into pieces, rearrange it and applying different effects and modulations to the single hits, isn't it. I have Kontakt, Intakt and Liveslice myself and I'm an avid user of Recycle for almost six years. But you can go pretty deep with Live - modulate each parameter of each of Impulse's slot in the envelope section, set up audio tracks for each of these slots and apply more effects, add sends, set up group channels etc. etc. I admit, at some point it could be difficult to maintain an overview, but it's the most sophisticated application I've come across (although Rex-support would be nice as well as an improvement of setting up warp-markers and envelopes with slopepoints) and it doesn't necessarily need a slicer. I think, things like deep freeze, the easy replacement of frozen clips with the rendered audio, the enhancement of the database features, automapping and the new racks will improve our workflow more than we'd imagine right now. Perhaps the Abletons have a slicer on their list, but these features seemed more important to them (and they will earn a sh*tload of money from film composers because of the video support - isn't Ableton a part of Avid?). Right now I'm very excited about the new features and the new Sampler - it could become a serious competitor to Kore and Kontakt. Enjoy the pancakes
