Errr, can't use Live 5 without electricity, can't have electricity without paying for it, can't pay for it unless you have money, can't have money unless you have a job...?
Or am I missing something?

I just started an office/cubicle job a couple months ago, right after graduating college. It's ok, but I don't think I want to be in the cube the rest of my life. I plan on working up my web/graphics and music skills/business in my free time and hopefully in a few years I'll be far enough with either of those that I can quit the cube or at least just do it part time.

I'm a bike courier.
I look forward to work
every day, rain or shine.
not bad considering it's
been my bread and butter
since 1989 or so- except
for three or four years
in the yukon. not much
call for that when i was there.
i hope i can still walk
in 20 years...
*yay*
scoping hotties and drinking
coffee all day long.
oh, and if you don't like your job
you should quit it
now that we're back on topic....

Homer's brain: Twenty dollars can buy many peanuts!
Homer: Explain how.
Homer's brain: Money can be exchanged for good and services.
You missed the beginning of that scene.... the best part. (Forgive me if I get this wrong.... it's purely from memory)
Homer: "Ahhhhh the last peanut. Drowning in the juices of his dearly departed brethren."
(Homer drops the peanut in between the sofa cushions... followed by the obligatory: D'oh!. He then reaches into the cushions.....
Homer: "Ewww, Sticky.... Ohhhh Slimey.... Ahhh Pointy..... Twenty dollars.... awwwww I wanted a peanut.
Wait a minute..... $20 dollars can buy many peanuts.... Explain how...
(In homer's mind he see's himself as a boy.... "Money is exchanged for goods and services.")
Homer: "Woo hooo!!!"

Man...congratulations. If you don't like your job I say quit immediately. Of course it's not quite that easy....sometimes people have responsiblities (like kids).
I went to law school and got a job right out of school that paid well, real well...it was like a summer internship/3 month job interview. Problem was, I hated it. I mean I hated it like a black cloud descending over me on Saturday because I knew the next day was Sunday which was the day BEFORE Monday!
Anyways the fact that I hated it so much bled through to my work and I didn't get the job offer...felt like a loser.....turned out to be the greatest thing that ever happened to me. I got into a different job, work about half the time I would've worked and now make twice as much money.
Dude...I'm the biggest capitalist in the world....love the U.S of A. But I would tell people who tell you to keep working no matter how much you hate it to go to hell. If you love what you do you'll be happier, and you'll be more productive.

congrats!

i can totally relate.... i used to work in social services (with schizophrenics, welfare clients, alcoholics, etc) and everyone was always thinking i hated my job because of the clients. i actually loved working with the clients, but it was the totally cynical, burnt out co-workers that brought me down and made me hate it.
have fun cranking out those beats....

njh, congratualtions!
Staying in a job you hate isn't worth the mental stress. Sounds like you have a plan to do something positive now and you will have the energy to see it through.
Good luck

New Jersey H,
There is hope! My roommate just got hired by a company to be their in-house producer of their company's new podcast. $35 bux an hour! I'm tellin' you, don't dismiss the podcast thing as dorky. It's good news for us audio freaks. She's getting a loaded MacBook Pro and a copy of you know what.... Ableton Live!
My job is okay... yesterday I got the nerve up to bring my laptop in and beta test right here in my cubicle... eventually my boss showed up and he didn't have a problem with it. He thought it was cool.
But damn. $35 an hour to operate Live. Makes ya think.

Yeah..... but in New York, isn't that like minimum wage... given the cost of living?

Quitting my job this year was the second best decision I made in 2006.
(the first best decision I made was extending my vacation an extra week in sunny California and calling in sick to work (in Toronto) every single morning!)
...we are conditioned to believe "works sucks and then you die..." i've hated 90% of my jobs. and for what?

well if the best job you could manage to get was working in a grocery store then I guess it doesn't make much difference, if that is your level. Welfare probably pays just as well and you can sit on your lazy ass playing with Live all day every day drinking malt liquor and dreaming of becoming Tiesto (never gonna happen).
As an alternative to living in dreamland, you could consider getting your thumb out of your ass and finding an educational course that might lead you to a worthwhile job. Unless you are living off daddy's trust fund, you'll probably end up homeless and unemployable at the rate you are going.
Nobody likes to work, but most people who are lucky enough to have a job get up every day and do their best to get on with it. It is not so bad when you get used to it, and if you have a mildly curious brain you might even find it interesting. When the $000s start rolling in, then you can spend very enjoyable evenings and weekends doodling with Live, and squandering your spare dosh on silly controllers/vsts.
You can't have any pudding if you don't eat your meat.

IMO, the key to success and happiness in your career are 1) have a passion for what you're doing, 2) excel at it, 3) make sure there's a market for it, 4) don't let it dominate your life, and 5) work for yourself. Be your own boss. Master of your own destiny. Keep the other fingers out of the pie. No leeches. Nobody else to control what you do, and nobody else to blame if it all goes wrong.
And education, knowledge, and discipline are the keys...
