I'm getting my own room/studio soon!

Post by Johnisfaster » Fri Oct 13, 2006 8:06 am

I've been approved for a new appartment where me and my girlfriend will reside. it's a pretty sweet place at a pretty sweet price but the best part of all is that I will finally have a studio of my very own without just having my desk full of crap in the bedroom, which is what I currently have.
yayyyyyyyyyyy!

I'm considering leaving the studio computer off the internet so I can actually be productive :)
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

yes do that!

And having a studio is a nice thing imho, I find it has a kind of psychological impact, because when you enter the studio you enter the studio and you are supposed to do music, not surfing, have a look at the weather forecats on TV or arguing w/girlfriend about the next dinner.. it's not like you have "a desk full of crap" like you said.

good luck

I recently converted my garage into a studio.

I have use rockwool in the walls and i have angled the walls and ceiling in an attempt to get the acoustics right in there.

I think i have done a good job. sounds great.

When there is no sound it s quiet, when i am in there the outside wold is completely forgotten about, and i have been the most productive that i have ever been sice finishing it.

My girl friend doesnt even bother to disturb me because i am likely to ignore her anyway when im in there.

All serious music-technologists need a dedicated studio space.

Most important.

Having your own studio is wonderful, no doubt about that. Yes, you should definitely keep the internet out of the studio if you want to be productive. I fought my wife for 3 years about not getting internet at home for this reason, as I knew it'd eat into my music time. I was right :(

come on gents

Its all a matter of will power.

Just dont go on the internet.

I have a wireless connection in my studio, all i do is switch my Wi-Fi off.

Im a bastard for loosing driver disks so i find the net most useful when i need to find a driver, or to search the Kontakt/Reaktor libraries etc etc

Just be regimented.

It's definitely a will power thing, no doubt. Alot of my posting is done at work, then when I get home I just wanna check to see if I helped someone or not earlier in the day, or business stuff. By the time I get done, 2 hours have passed, grrr. Hard for me to Just Say No.

I do like you do now, we have our wireless transmitter upstairs, so I'll go up and switch it off if I really want to get something done.

Yes, i always need to check my emails at some point in the evening. Then some Ableton Support emails come through saying that there have been posts in a thred im watching and then i check them and end up replying.

Thats why i do this for a few weeks and then i wont be heard of for a while.

Im just watching the baby fall asleep, as soon as she does it will be into my studio to work on a few tunes ive been creating.

I find it best to work on 2-3 things at once because i start ruining them if i spend to long on the same thing.

For me it was great to get a laptop and get OUT of the studio. All too often I'd sit down and it would be like "now you must make music". Sometimes I like to have other distractions around to help me focus and loosen up. When I'd get in a creative slump being in the studio only amlified it. It's been a few months out of the studio, now I'm kind of gravitating back into it.

Congrats!! It is nice to create your own creative womb to jam out in.

I have a laptop that is the core of my studio, its like a removable/portable module that also really works when i remove it from that environment. I have evrything needed to make a start on anything.

I take it absolutely everywhere with me, whenever i get inspired i can make a start on a new project. I have done this on a train, bus, other peoples houses (when they sleep) or even just when sitting in the living room and i cannot be arsed with a serious session.

The studio for me is all about taking those ideas and developing them. Its much easier when you have a few blocks to start off with, and the studio is kind of a "right, lets get some tunes going"

I think i spend just as much time in the studio as i do out of it, but i do feel that my studio is a very important space where75% of productivity of ach finished tune has happenned.

some of the most creative times I ever had was when I used to take the lappy to the coffee shop and drink coffee and smoke mad amounts of cigs all day on my day off. but then they got wifi. and it totally is a will power thing but apparently I have no will power when it comes to checking emails and all that crap cause I end up doing it too much and then all the sudden I'm not making music anymore AND im bored!! how is it that the thing that distracts me from music also bores me? don't know but it does.

This from the man that will reply to every thread on the front page, even if his answer to someone's question is "I don't know". :P

But yeah, good luck now that you have your new area of beat making

It's nice to be able to seperate from it all - just don't isolate yourself (unless that's what you're into that kind of thing)

My only advise is keep everything at arms reach

Your turntables
Your records
controllers
etc etc

and get a laptop, that way you wont be chained to your room - I hated that after a bad session or I wasn't in the mood, feel me?

peace
