Operator - Course Setting to Zero (how?)
Hey there.
I'm working the the Operator tutorials in Live and the illustrations and text say to set the course frequency to zero, but mine only goes down to 0.5. What should I do?
Thanks!

I am near the completion of the tutorials, and it appears to me to be more a situation of it representing a past version of the software as opposed to a typo. The tutorial also illustrates certain drop down functionalities differently than they are in the program itself.
It is rather peculiar that they haven't updated this...

I'm pretty sure that there must have been an earlier version where the current 0.5 was 0.0. Presumably they changed it to be more internally consistent (i.e. so the tuning actually correlates with the frequency, which can never be 0 if there's any sound.) The sounds you get by using 0.5 are the ones you would expect to get from the tutorial text (or at least this is what I thought when I did the tutorials).
What you don;t know it by heart???Machinate wrote:Right, it's of course called multiplier. Didn't have Operator in front of me, thanks for the correction.Amaury wrote:Hi,Machinate wrote:hit "fixed" and set the ratio to 0.0.
To be exact, clicking "fixed" is correct, but it is the Multiplier
You're welcome,

my understanding is that waveshaping can only be achieved if the fixed button is on and the multi parameter is set to 0, the frequency parameter (in terms of pitch) is then irrelevant for that particular oscillator since its frequency is multiplied by 0 (120hz x 0 = 0hz).
the envelope for the waveshaping oscillator controls the amplitude, and the envelope of the oscillator which is being waveshaped controls the amplitude of its signal but also affects the timbre of the sound, or presumably the amount of waveshaping... (i'm sure there must be a clearer way of explaining this)
does operator come with any patches which demonstrate this technique?
it might be an idea to make a waveshaping preset category / tutorial?
it seems to be a question which pops up quite frequently...
on a final note, and without wanting to be pedantic, i realise this a global community... but for the sake of concise information, and to avoid a typo in the next update to the operator manual:
"course" is a noun, which is used in context with a racing track or a teaching course.
"coarse" is an adjective, which can be used to describe the increments in a tuning system (fine or coarse tuning).
i understand "american" english has different spellings, but as far as i know this is the correct spelling...
