If you want XP and OSX to read/write on both partitions, make sure you install XP under a FAT32 File system.

As for swapping quickly between operating systems, I'd recommend something like Parralells or maybe Crossover. Parralells is cool because you can have XP running in a window and avoid the problem of having to reboot. Of course, this is unacceptable for games or other cpu-intensive applications. However just for audio editing in Soundforge or whatever, I'd be confident a MacBook with 2GB Ram would suffice.

As for the MacBook in general, they are excellent notebooks when you take the design, features, size, weight and power into consideration. I'm running a 2GHz WhiteBook with 512RAM and run Logic and Live comfortabley, especially Logic which is especially smooth thanks to duelcore support.

You want a 2.5 internal SATA HD for MacBook? I'd recommend the Hiatchi Travelstar. I've heard a lot of hype about these HD's because they are perpendicular or something. Apparently this means they have larger capacity but use less engery and generate less heat. You can buy a 160GB 5400RPM drive or I've seen a 100GB a 7200RPM drive. I swear someone told me you can buy a 160GB 7200RPM drive but I'm not sure where from. Well check out Hiatchi travelstar anyway, make sure it is SATA and 2.5 or it will not work on the MacBook.

It does fly. without the upgraded ram, it's fast but the extra ram takes it to another league. I use external drives, as it just means I don't fill my mac up with crap... it's also easier to back things up from an external drive.
I notice you're a video director, have you done any editing with your macbook and what did you think?
I use it for design work and editing, compositing etc... even runs shake on it, even though I don't use it.. FCP runs fine, though I mainly use After Effects. Does what I used to use a G5 to do.

I've made a 40 minute film on it in, and numerous videos and titles for broadcast. I sometimes use other computers for 3D rendering though, but 3D is still a tricky one with laptops anyway.

here's my first qualm.... my macbook only has 512 megs of ram and a 60gig harddrive.
besides the fact that that's what I could afford... what do you think about that, how dis-satisfied would you be with your macbook in that regard.
I'm used to 2gigs ram and i've got 5 hard drives- 1 500gig and 4 350gig drives this is all connected to my desktop, but my desktop is an old amd 3500

my second qualm; I don't know what to expect...I admit that I got the macbook to mainly run windows xp on, but I'm going to run some nice free apps that i've found for macs and also i'm probably going to run metasynth

but!!!....out of the box how happy can i expect to be about it?, is it just going to fly even with the low ram and harddrive, is it easy to replace the hard drive myself I was thinking about picking one up from frys electronics, anybody have a recommendation for which one to get?
maybe some ram recommendations too if you gott'em

O...M...F...G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant fucking believe what Im reading. There is no point in saying any more except there really are a lot of right fucking ninny boys on this forum.

I'm still really understanding why you'd order a MacBook, and THEN ask these questions? Bit backward init?

go with your instincts: don't open the box. push back from the box,

Do Not... open... the box.

One thing I don't get.. you consider an AMD 3500 to be old?

You must be one of those people that just buys gear all the time and never makes any music.

If you're already having that many doubts about it, it probably just wasn't meant to be...

Send it back. You can find better cheaper laptops for running Windows on.

A beautiful woman has just turned up at my door, and asked me to make love to her as a favour, as she badly needs to lose her virginity.
Should I go for it, or shove needles into my eyes? I trust the opinion of strangers over my own instincts.
