if you want to buy sample CD's you should check out audiomidi.com...they seem to have really good prices (at least for the two items I've purchased from them)

good house beats are a little difficult. it's hard to start with a raw kit and instantly have a great beat. it's worth-while to put some hard work into sequencing the beat ... all sorts of tricks here -- record the beat live w/ a midi keyboard, then quantize but at maybe 95-98% ... find a good swing setting ... mess with velocity on some of your drum hits ... nudge a beat here or there ... the list goes on and on. getting the sequence to work is just part of the challenge.
next, just the sound of the beat. say you are using impulse ... mess with the filter, pan, volume etc. of the drums until they fit together.
you might want to route some of the drums to their own effect-track ... maybe put a flange on the hi-hat, or a compressor or saturator on the bass drum, or a delay on the snare ... all of this is a good bit of work, but it pays off.

cool topic, what kills me is that kick that sounds like a stick of stick of dynamite in a down pillow with the hi hat just ahead of the 'and', closing just right, I could (most of us have) listen to that kick/hi hat combo for days.

ok some good suggestions here, i guess i need quality samples to start with i have all the sample cds around at the moment for house,
some are of course better than others,
id like to add some swing to the beat but live isnt really the best programme for adding swing to drums is it ?
i normally use my midi keyboard then move em about with quantize off
like the idea of using a live loop with the lows cut from it, whats best a filter or eq ?? i want to blend the sounds nicely so you cant really tell theres a little loop in there, should i use filters or eqs for high pass and low pass cuts ?
i read all the time about using shelfing eqs etc ??
