teoreticaly yes;
but realtime rendering is a quality insurance from PT that ALL of your samples are actualy being rendered.
each time your cpu, hard disk or anything in your system have hicups while rendering, and a sample has been lost, rendering stops.
offline rendering sometimes doesn't render all of your samples.

Oh no my friend.

ProTools HD:

record 100+ tracks of I/O at a time at the highest resolutions without a worry.

record a triple scale 80 piece orchestra without one single glitch.

involved in 99% of all the new music we hear.

Creatively slice and dice it all with great speed and ease like no other program.
Go ahead, cut across a hundred tracks and drop it anywhere before your hand is off the mouse.

How about 90 simultaneous dbl precision 48 bit plugins. I have never topped my plugin count even on 60+ track R&B mixes and I use hungry plugz. It sounds gorgeous.

Locks to anything like a champ.

It lets me do whatever I want, quickly, without a single complaint.

There's a ton more differences. Working with that amount of raw horse power is truly creative and liberating to me.

Don't know about Nuendo. Yeah, HD is expensive but its the champ of em all and in any studio I walk in. I didn't choose it, it chose me so I had to buy it. Anyway, It paid for itself in three weeks. For what it does, price is not the issue. i like butter on both sides of my bread. Can't stand digidesign though. But I have never called support. Ever. Plugged in my HD3 and have never had a problem in 4 years. One time I left it on and booted up for three months without a single crash or glitch.

PT HD ought to be 'a champ' given it's astronomical price tag. Certainly, PTLE running RTAS plugins is a very limited and weak compromise albeit a cheap one. Pro Tools HD has always had an amazing reputation as an audio editor but the overall package is not as strong, especially it's MIDI which is less feature rich then Nuendo. This is why a lot of people like to compose their tracks in Logic or Cubase or Live etc, then import the rendered audio files into PT for final mixing/mastering.

It is not quite as popular in Europe where people are running Sequoia, Nuendo and Sawstudio more as alternatives. And many people prefer to run iz technology (recently bought by Otari) RADAR digital recording system. Pro Tools is sometimes run begrudgingly through necessity rather than being a superb system to use.

Still, it's not digidesign's fault that the competition can't drum up any more business, and that digi have done very little in terms of enhancements in the past 3-4 years, it's money for old rope for them and no sane studio owner is going to dump their investment in something which has become industry standard and have to splash more cash. It would be nice to have more challenge, even if it just makes Digi work harder on keeping their product current and innovative which they don't have to do right now because people are just drones to the number 1 product and protecting previous investment.

i'm going to have to disagree. there is no reason that offline rendering should be any less reliable than realtime. in fact, i believe it should be easier to delver a "perfect" render offline because the software doesn't have to worry about delivering the render before the playback buffer runs out.

thats certainly what I think. I'm surprised when people suggest that rendering could be flawed, and resampling 'perfect'.....

As far as editing goes, they have better automation tools for drawing in things like this, correct?:

This took me a while in Live. And this is only a screenshot of only 1 beat 8O
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you'd be able to draw a line that modulates at every grid line, so hold down the mouse button and drag right, and you'd have on/off automation every other grid point, correct? Can't do this in Live, or if you can, I just wasted a lot of time

It doesn't matter to me what the standard is, I'll use it. Point is, hd's as solid as a rock and does the big bad gigs for a reason.

The midi is extremely solid and super tight. 90% don't need super deep midi programability whatever that is. Also, hd has all you need in inst plugz.

It does bad ass sound design and has cut, edited or mixed everything we hear. It is very dedicated to dependable power, agility and sound.
If you don't need those things then you can't appreciate my opinion or why it's #1.

Shit, I sound like a fuckin fanboy. Ya use whatever gets your thing together fast and sounding great. It don't matter. btw, the above envelope is available in PT.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I suppose I should dust off my 002 to do my MIDI work.

Well, for the original questions...
Sebastian wrote:Hi

Is it common for some Ableton users to record audio Pro Tools as well?

Im trying to get a clear picture of what will happen with my demo songs when Im finish writing them in Ableton.

One scenario many people tell me about is that I could bounce the songs to Pro Tools and have it tweaked/perfected by an experienced audio engineer guy that will probably use Pro Tools. Im not saying I cant or wont try to tweak my projects but I aint no engineer with 20 years of experience etc.

thanks
I use the two together all the time when I'm working on loopbased music. I never bounce anything (ReWire you know  ). Like a previous poster, I also record any guitars, or actually anything in Pro Tools. Lives is for loops and stuff like that.

One can of course make great sounding music in Live alone, but when it comes to editing audio (I.E. a vocal take, a guitar take or whatever) then Pro Tools is very good to work with. I also find the plug-ins to be superior, this have been changing lately though since many of the good ones are now available in all or most native formats.

In the end the only thing that's interesting is what works for you, not what brand it is you're using.

According to Robert Henke (who might be a bit partial...), the reason for PTs realtime only rendering is that the PT engine can't handle any other time scale. It is a limitation rather than a feature.

well, there's a couple of things i would suggest for that:

1) draw one instance of the envelope and select it. now use apple-d (or cmd or whatever the pc thing is) . apple-d will duplicate what you've done as many times as you push it.

2) use a repeating clip envelope.
