Faster CPU, standard 2 GB ram... not bad. with a student discount it comes out just under $2000 -plus a free 4gb ipod. I don't know if the differences are enough to embolden the price gap between macbook.. and "pro"

Imac should be getting a new industrial design soon. perhaps touchscreen?

Are they still using those dual 8086 chips? I wonder if you can port the software from an MPC2k to run on them, those use dual 8086s as well. That'd be totally sweet.

edit - My bad, the MPC actually uses dual 286s. But aren't they all supposed to be like compatible? I mean, it's not like they'll have gone and went and added more registers or made all instructions the same length or anything like that, you know, fixed them, it is? I still think someone should look into it, really... It'd be totally sweet!

Yeah, i didn't see that mentioned in the one article I read, that's a decent update then.

hms, interesting point... of course, the difference between the 286 and modern x86 chips is that they do have lots more registers, cache, instructions (like SSE and MMX, just to name two examples) than their older counterparts.

However, the code should be somewhat backwards-compatible, but I susupect that an emulator would be needed to get it to run on modern x86 chipsets, but at least it wouldn't have to translate the instructions. Kinda like how parallels works, instead of virtual pc which has to translate calls across architectures.

Still puzzling why someone hasn't already made such a project... maybe there's more to it than just that. ;)

Damn, beat me to it. That is really the one thing that is nice about this update. And the LED backlit screens if it actually proves to be better on the old battery!

I am still waiting for a 13.3" Macbook Pro. It would kick some serious ass, but the way they have things priced, I really don't see a niche where it would go price-point-wise.

Well, it's not making me feel full of regrets for buying my MBP earlier this year.
Yup...

The base model is only 0.04gHz faster, and comes with 2GB instead of 1GB (1 GB cost me $35 elsewhere) compared to the first c2d MBP I bought last year. I mean it's cool, but nothing to really get excited about this time IMO. Memory speeds are the same, graphics are the same, HD speed and size is the same, so ?????

800mhz fsb

it will be quite a bit faster

Oh, don't try to change my mind with facts!

There will be no 8086-derivatives on the Enterprise...

800mhz fsb

it will be quite a bit faster
why everyone says this ???

the processor speeds are almost the same,
they just increased the fsb but droped the multiplier one notch
and DID not upgrade the memory to ddr2 800 that would allow the optimal 1/1 relationship between fsb and ddr (this hapens with previous mbp and all mb, fsb = ram = 667)

it really needs to be tested, when real units finally arrive, if there is any perpeceptible differences regarding:

cpu fsb/chpset and performance
led display/chipset and battery time

i am guessing there migth be some permance improvement regarding the 965 (santa rosa) chipset, in the desktop the memory controller seems to be superior to the previous 945 (the currrent napa mbp and c2d chipset) so it will probably happen aswell in the mmobile version

but it still misses big time on not having esata port, it is just a shame...
and also does not feature the new flash drives that speed boot up times and are used as hd cache

maybe with penryn...
