CHAINED TRACKS ARRANGEMENT TO FREE LIVE SESSION WIZ FADERFOX

Post by supamonsta » Wed Jun 06, 2007 7:29 pm

Hello everybody,

I know my question is somehow largely debated in lots of posts in lots of topics by there... but I did not find THE topic really focused on it.

I go :

I have a live set containing 13 tracks all chained in the arrangement view, with some automations (FX). It's good to produce precisely my tracks, but it totally sucks on stage, really boring.

I have a virus to play synths, and my drums and samples come from impulses and audio tracks. Say 4 midi tracks to virus, and 10 audio/drums tracks.

I am waiting to receive my new order shipping : FADERFOX LV2 :D

I am since 10 days scrambling my brain to figure out what I want to do and what I can effectively do with this new controller.

I want to be able to SCRAMBLE and DISTORT and DISTURB and SQUEEZE and REMIX and BREAK and TECHNOIZE and ABSTRACTIZE and TOTALLY TWEAKING my so boring determined arrangement "playlist"...

not only FX, I want to be able to hi-jack and short-cut and melt all my arrangement sequence...

creating for each arrangement clip a session clone?

then creating session "blocks" with n scenes re-creating the arrangement basic sequence, but ln loop style,

then be able to scroll and warp from one scene to another following the feeling...

Shall I totally get rid of the arrangement concept to really get free?

Will the LV2 bring me the tools for it?

(I know dudes, don't even mention it. I have a lemur one day, but today is the day of the faderfox, penny penny ! )

thanks for all kind of thoughts, manners, tips, opinions, how do you process your live session?

ps: this is no kind of mp3 mixing. all samples are just voices or sounds, the rest is only midi clips (impulse, virus).

cheers

niko

My first ableton Live approach was to work in session view (I was used to pattern style machine live playing), but I wanted to have really smooth songs so I progressively recorded trax in arrangement sessions (session play with arrangement midi record),

Now I have precisely build chained songs, but my session clips are old ones, lots of things have changed from session to arrangement and most of trax really differ from session to arrangement, so I think I have to "clone" arr. clips to session clips for all my songs to be accessible in session... but it may restrict my gigging freedom. (can't get rid of my songs, I want at least to be able to play the major themes among lots of live improvisation...)

such a dilemma !

Working in arrangement does not allow to quick and easy jump from one place of song to another (place or song), does it?

I'am still waiting for my faderfox, I hope it's philosophy can shift me to good live direction , and having it in hands will probably help a lot to figure out my dilemma ! :D

:D got it for 225 euros shipping included. (I live in France)

at this price I was thinking of buying a second one (LV2, LX2 or LD2) but I thougth it was better to order one, test it, and then if needed for what I wanna do, then buy another one...

I was aiming at novation remote SL, but in every "midi live control" topic there are lots of people totally in love with faderfoxes, some deceived by build quality of SL's, and faderfoxes seem to be perfectly adapted to LIVE GIG, that's for me!

Arrangement view is really great to build complex songs from 0 or from session play... but it is now some kind of jail to me, my fault, self-caged !!

and I want to get back to seesion gig WITH some of the advantages given by arrangement work...

Hurry up UPS!!! I want my LV2 now!!!

just beginning to appreciate the wide range of possibilities offered by this mini thing !

Got some (hard?) work now to make my liveset match to LV2 philosophy....

oooops sorry !

I am still scrambling my brain in every direction to find my way out (that's ableton's live richness !!),

but I found my first steps:

I'm getting rid of my arrangement, but not without translating it in session clips with logical names and progression.

I use the follow actions to automate the critical steps of each song , but leaving the possibility to stay looped on this or that clip as long as I like to get free to live squeeze !

the LV2 is great to this, but I don't use it 100% for now, I find the provided livesets to be a bit obsolete and not enough specific, and to recreate the same "remotability" is indeed really hard, so....

BRAIN SCRAMBLE IS NOW MY LIFE ;)

I even sometimes forget to PLAY as I'm deeply stucked in logical-routing-midi remote path-best live performing arrangement-etc etc etc

so I did not let it go, I'm TOTALLY IN IT !!!

some people to share their faderfox live performance config and tips with us?

cheers
