Cases - So I went to the local Tap Plastics shop. ~$150 for a 1 piece top made from the .pdf and the bottom half made from 5 pieces of plastic glued together with the edges routed to a curve.

The top gets expensive because there are _64_ holes to cut, the minimum is $100 for laser cutting and 64 hand drilled holes approaches $100. Plus the laser cutting is more precise and leaves a better finish.

The bottom part is about $50 for parts and labor.

Anyway, that's 1 option. I'm not too worried about it right now, I have a few weeks to look around, keep my eyes peeled for common objects I can modify to make a box.

And how much?
I can, I'll start the bidding at $250 plus parts and shipping. ;)

Another possibility for panels, I haven't tried it yet.

I wish they had made the buttons round, that would make things far easier.

Yes, Tone, while you're at it:

Looks really pro ... and expensive (relatively speaking).
That's all for you, because I'm not spending more than $20 on my faceplate.

Just got the idea, looking at that ( ^ ) foams site:
Maybe a carefully cut MOUSEPAD will work.

I'm thinking low-tech stuff like that for this piece of the puzzle. All for the fancy space-suit stuff, though. Totally respect that if a gentleman wan't to wear the sunday's clothes.

mousepad - good idea, neoprene (wet suits)

I too am trying to think outside the box... the patterns on apple pies come to mind, that would avoid the square cuts...

Fabric, leather.... uhhhh.... Dunno but I'm liking the communal efforts.

Mesmer - I saw your post on the monome.org site about sparkfun buttons and how to make contacts for them. I also have 4 of those pads, I plan on using breadboard I have that has long strips of copper on it. The conductive button is wider than a few of the strips so I plan on shorting across those. I hope that makes sense, I'm not explaining myself very well. I won't get on that one for a while, I want to get the monome kit down, then make the sparkfun my attempt at a color version.

Tone,

that sounds like a fair price. I'll wait to the thread matures to see what all I would need. I'm jocking for purple and blue LED's and I do like the machined case that original 40h came in. But a flat matt gray to match my VAIO would look tits. Oh it's white on the outside and gray in the inside. It looks like a MAC, but just not as femme. It would look great next to my Xone 92.

You just hit it:

LEATHER it IS.

This is awsome. Yamaha suck on that for a while: All your ideas are belong to us, biatches!!!

I know at least two maybe three Leather Shops, They are used to doing custom stuff; I'll just print them the specs/pdf for the faceplate, and pick it up later that week. Maybe $40, I just doubled my budget (disclaimer: I do not work in the government  ) but that's ok. The look on the thing, for the custom stuff I am expecting is going to be fabulous. Great work!!!

(secret fallback plan: $5 mousepad 8) )

Re: surface mount (SMD) LEDs on the button board, I found this pic

It shows how one would solder SMD LEDs onto through hole landings.

I took the line drawing of the 3 sized plates, printed the biggest one at 10 inches h/w per the moderators estimate and I must say, those buttons are SMALL and tight.

I can see programming it with clips and follow actions to flash on the beat would be really easy.

Methinks that building a 256 would be the way to go.

so how much would it cost me to get one of you dudes to make me a monome layed out as 4x16 instead of 8x8. ?
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.
