fanless pc systems?

Post by kirle » Thu Jun 14, 2007 3:25 pm

Hi,

is there anyone who owns or has some experience with fanless pc systems [i hate noise - if not made with live itself :-) ]. since i'm living in germany i'm thinking about buying a system from "deltatronic" or "ichbinleise.de".

Thanks in advance

I'm running liquid cooling on my CPU, but I still have 2 fans to cool the other parts. Of course the liquid cooling has its own fan, but the point is its SO much quieter that you can hardly hear anything.

from the end PC noise website
Concentrate on the THREE BIG SOURCES of PC noise - the Power Supply, the CPU Fan, and the Case Fan

I also am doing liquid cooling on my computer but still have 3 fans, 2 for the radiator and one for the power supply. All low noise. Its hard to tell when the computer is on except when a CD/DVD is spinning up and occasional I do hear the hard drives. Other than that, its dead quite.

I have a Core2Duo with a stock fan, and it's so quiet, I don't even know it's on. I have an Antec Sonata case, which has a nice quiet power supply and quiet system fan, and my graphics card has no fan. The only noise I hear is when the hard drives start churning.

Has anyone tried those hard drive silencers? They are like a small box your hard drive sits in.

SilenX Luxurae Hard Drive Silencing Solution (HDSS). The HDSS is a combination of both of the traditional approaches to hard drive silencing. It combines a sturdy container that can be mounted in your case as well as sound muffling technology that is designed to reduce the vibration noise and motor whine of any standard 3.5â?ÂÂ

those hard drive cases sound good, but I'd worry about heat and diminished drive life.

They actually claim to help keep your hard drive temps down as well.

Features
Acoustic foam for maximum sound dampening
Dual side-mounted heatsinks for effective heat dissipation
Thermal tape for mess-free conductivity
Two-year warranty

Don't know how true it is. I'd like to hear from somebody that has used one.

Thanx for your inputs so far ... I finally decided not to go for a fanless system, but to buy a "as silent as possible" DAW optimized and customized system from Digital AudionetworX ( http://www.da-x.de ) ... the beast will arrive next week ... i will post my experiences - hopefully only the best - soon

Sweet!
I'd be interested to hear how quiet it is.
Is it the 'Audioworkstation Ultra-Silent' system?
I've been looking into the fanless systems and I'd like to know if the Power supply, being a 400Watt, would be ample with 3 hard drives. ( 1 x 150 raptor and 2 x 500 w/digital ) http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/process

Keep me updated on how happy you are with the Digital AudionetworX.

I've had a few machines in for repair from a nearby studio with SilenX drive cases. Drives ran VERY hot in them, and two of six had failed.
I'd soundproof the case, not the drive.
Just cover the inside of the side panels with roof flashing. Like this stuff. Cheap and easy and very good results.
Worked nicely on my Land Rover bulkhead and cab too

i got a pc from them. its incredible quiet.
but of cause noone can beat the physics! i am using 3 uad´s in it and they definatly need some air.

i also saw the ultra silent system and they sayed its definitly not possible to host very warm parts in it like multi uad´s and i guess raptors get very hot too.

Hmmm, thanks for the advice. Looks like these are something to be avoided.

I had a lot of issues with noise on my old PC and decided after talking to IT guys that I would buld my own. Having my spec of PC built for me would have cost a small fortune, so after getting loads of advice and help from people who knew better, and were very kind to have helped I finally built my system.

I chose a Corsair HX620 PSU - deadly silent and modular. I only need a few cables at the moment but it seems pretty good and you get special reusable cable ties with it.

I also chose an Antec P180 case. Acoustically inulated, weighs a ton, but has three big fans. I have found that with my system I can run it happily on the slowest fan settings and not encounter any heat problems.

Lastly I chose a good mobo with great heatsinks built in, a thermaltake tower heatsink (no fan was needed), corsair dominator ram as that has heatsinks and an XFX graphics card as that too had a huge heatsink.

My mobos heat is registered at 28 degrees C on the slowest case fan settings, and the cp us at 34! Pretty good eh. I can publish the whole spec if anyone wants later. :D Just dont ask me for advice on PCs
