anymore I prefer racks to people anyway.
there's not enough time in the week to get into all the toys, monome 40h, max/msp (great combo!!), practicing guitar and bass, mpc, scratching vinyl, getting into downloaded live packs from CovOps and PureMagnetik, not to mention the cool shit people post in the forum and just general goofing off with Live. tonight I'll add a fcb1010 so I can jump from toy to toy and layer some noise, hopefully it'll encourage me to try more toys in the same session.
is it time to go home yet? no more worky, want to play...

In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?

In my 20's I would go out to the bars a lot...about 3 nights a week. But around 30 I hit the realization that it's great to socialize, BUT how many times do I need to see the same old schleps in my little town, talk about the same crap, suck on the same beer, and stare at the same burly women with droopy boobs?
My hometown is mostly a bedroom community for people settling down, raising a family. Sadly, most women here haven't traveled anywhere except Ocean City, MD. I know a few who say they don't even want to go there anymore.
So the result is, we've got avg looking, insecure women who put on an air like they're made of gold. The worst of both worlds! So you've got to have your top game to compete against the rednecks for the slim pickins selection of semi-frumpy women. Ugh! Ok, I exaggerate...but only a little bit...
My friend and I were joking that there's something in the water, maybe testosterone or something?! In additude, the women in our town have bigger balls then the men. So everyone is busting each other's balls! Now that's sad...
So I thought, "Chances of meeting any quality women in this small town are next to nil, so if I forget about them and cut back on going out so much, I could do something productive with all that time!" So over the next couple of years, I started accumulating all this gear and putting together my bedroom studio. When I gave up the pointless crusade of hunting for worldly women in my hometown that simply aren't there, I gained so much time!
I went out last night to kind of a tiki bar deck party. It's from 7-10pm which is the prime time fun part, and then everybody moves inside to the smoky room, so that's my cue to leave. 3 hours is just enough time hang out with everyone for the party action, and still leave in time to avoid being one of the losers who are huddled and hovering around the dance floor, "scoping and scraping the bottom of the scene" for any chance they can get.

I go down to DC a lot...That's where the beautiful AND approachable women are, so I turn my radar back on. I do much better in that scene. So I'm not wasting my time thinking about women while I'm down there.
So my advice: Live in a small town and do Studio night fever until your eyes bug out. No distractions! Then when you're totally bugged out, go to a city, debug and let it all hang out! Rinse and repeat.
Too much Saturday night fever can get old too. Think of it as, you're the rock star who crashes in making a suprise cameo appearance. Not the guy in the swingers movie who scans every joint he goes into and says it's "friggin dead!"
Works for me!

Actually, I find my best work comes when I am quickly throwing ideas together. If I spend too much time in the studio things become stagnant - I spend my time EQing kick drums rather than actually WRITING MUSIC. That's not how it should be.
Also, I can;'t work happily with anyone else... Suffocates me. Everything ends up being a compromise.

Everybody needs the nerdy moments, specially when it comes down to 'art'.
Just make sure it doesn't take away your sociale life and, most of all, doesn't become frustrating.
If you have a passion, just stick with it.
But always remember there's a real life, out there, and that partying hard is another way of cutting breaks through your music.
