Live 6 Question: Creating customized names in piano roll?

Post by gregoreck » Sat Sep 09, 2006 2:37 pm

Been trying to figure this out but no luck yet. Was wondering if it's now possible to create customized names in the piano roll for 1 instance of Battery (so i can name each separate drum to show up like in Impulse).

I saw that you could name key zones in instrument racks but i don't see how you could create multiple names for each drum in one instance of Battery...

Anyone know if you can do this? or how?

or maybe an interesting workaround? ;)

much appreciated!

I don't own Battery but here is the Live 6 Drum map workaround:
  • make a group with something very minimal in it - such as a midi-pitch (dont bother adjusting it, deactivate it even!).
  • duplicate that about 20 times (drag the MidiPitch to the new layer space to duplicate )
  • open the Layer 'key' editor
  • set all the key-ranges for all the layers you have just made
  • name the layers you made.
  • right click on the layers and choose "show names in midi editor" from the Layers context menu
  • put Battery AFTER the rack.
that should work :) you should now see all the names of your layers in the piano roll, If you dont then make sure "Fold" is selected. If you see names like : " Kick | Kick2 | Snare " in one slot ... you have set your key ranges wrong and they are overlapping.

I use a variant method using lots of Simplers in multiple sub-racks , such as Kicks, Snares, Toms, etc. That way I can replace and group Kit sections quickly.

If you use sub-racks remember to "show midi names" on the master rack, not the sub rack- otherwise you will only see the names of your Toms (for example.)

hope that makes sense

Yeah, thanks for the idea. I'd be elated if Live (via a feature or a workaround) could make it so I don't have to remember which notes on which drums....

Here's an empty rack for all the notes http://users.telenet.be/Vayner/MIDI%20N ... er.adg.zip

This is such an excellent little way to use an empty rack, I just thought I would bump it because I just discovered it thanks to some recent battery thread.

Setting up names this way for your drum parts is so very useful for programs where your drum parts stay on the same keys like Addicitve Drums or general midi kits like with Stylus RMX.

You can just make a few custom named empty racks for each plug, very handy!

I did this kind of thing, setting up templates for drums with the hyper editor in Logic, and really missed that kind of naming feature in Live, but this is a great workaround in Live, so thanks for the heads up!

Just tried this, very cool!

However, I can't seem to make sense of this final step. Can this all be done on the same track? I can get it perfectly working by placing Battery on another track, and routing it's inputs from the rack's track. But if I put Battery at the end of the rack, it either just places it in Chain 1 only, or else replaces the entire rack with just Battery! I tried sub-racking, but to no avail.

Is this supposed to be all on one track?

:?: is there also a workaround for naming cc numbers in the miditracks you need to use to use a vsti multitimbraly? I automate almost everything and looking for which cc is mapped to which parameter is driving me insane at a daily basis.

Cold dutch Heineken beers and my eternal thanks for the one with a working tip :)

That is brilliant, Angstrom! Thanks a lot! :D

I've been looking for something like that for a long time to get a better overview of DFH ...

It takes some work, but once done, this really helps make Battery less frustrating in Live. I've made a rack for the Full Jazz Kit and the Pop Kit, so far. If anyone's interested I can upload the rack.
