toshiba Satellite A100-596
My best friend has one and it has given him several problems. In fact, one year ago today- we each bought one, but I chickened out and canceled the order because I khad my suspicions. I warned him about the quality, but he went ahead and kept his order. Now he is pissed he didn't listen to me, Toshiba support sucks too! We both confimed that we would be able to buy the extened warranty at a different time-still within the 1st year, Toshi reps said that would be fine. Well, my homeboy had a week left on his standard warranty and when he went to buy the extended, they refused! They said they changed their policy and would not allow him to buy the extened warranty. Fuck that. I know this for myself because I confirmed the same thing when I initially went to purchase one. A few months later, some folks here posted their fan-related problems.
So if it were me, I would sell it and put whatever money I could get for it into a new machine.
My $.02, do what you want with it-

hmm... that's really strange seeing all of you have so much probs with your toshibas.
i have Satellite M55, centrino processor (not duo) 1.7, 1Gb of RAM, Presonus Firebox (firewire) sound card, now two years old... - never had any problems with my setup. really, i've done a dozens of gigs with it, traveled a whole europe, i also use it for a daily use, internet and all that, and it just WORKS.
who knows, maybe there are issues with dual core processors, but i'm very skeptical about that.
u all use ASIO4ALL drivers, right?

The pre duo Toshibas were OK. Thanks to Peedro I didnt fall for one of those. I am surprised that after a year the issue wasn't fixed. After hearing about his prob I did some search and found the sad truth, however there was a link to description how to fix it with photos etc, search the forum. Unfortunately it involves some serious work since the only way is building in a hardware switch for the fans. If the warranty is over anyway might be an option.
I bought a toshiba laptop last february strictly for music production. The laptop has been back to the repair center twice this year. once because the hard drive failed and once because all the usb ports stopped working. The end result for the usb issue was to replace the motherboard. Both repairs took several weeks before I got the laptop back. And both times I had to completely reload all my programs, music, samples, etc. (which is time consuming as well)
I would never buy a Toshiba conputer product again.
my 2 cents.

Here is the thread that talks about the sollution by switching HAL drivers from ACPI to MPS Multiprocessor.
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe. ... dID=18631t
I have been running this for about 6 months now, and have no more glitching or latency spikes (confirmed using DPCLatency checker). No real downside except lack of support and old-school shut-down. Still better than the hit I would take ditching the laptop. You don't really have anything to lose by trying this! Just back-up your hard drive and have your driver disk ready...you can always switch it back to ACPI if you want to. I TAKE 0 RESPONSIBILITY, HERE! But it worked great for me!

amcnally,
I can't find an option for running the laptop in multiprocessor mode?
can't see any drivers for this?.....is there any chance of listing an exact path to this? as i'm not the greatest tech minded person...
What i have just found though is different settings for the cooling system, by changing the cooling system to battery mode permanently the fan is running slower and is less eratic.....not sure if this is gonna help until i get chance to try it tomorrow.

Guess it depends on the model...
I run a Toshiba Satellite P25 S526 laptop with a P4 3.2 Ghx processor and 1 Gig of Ram and it's worked great for the past 3 years I'v had it. It's more of a desktop than a laptop though with it's huge 17inch display and short battery life.
Only complaints I have would be the slow harddrive revolution of 4400 rpm. But it rarely goes over 25% CPU load with ableton. I use the Aiso drivers as well.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Duo T5200 @1.60GHz, 2 GB RAM. I run Live with Reason 4 all the time with 30+ tracks and have never heard one audio glitch.
My Dell Inspiron however, was a piece of shit. Amazingly fast computer at the time, but I had to take it out of ACPI mode and run it in standard. It worked, but the side effects were really annoying. Not to mention, I was NEVER able to get it back to ACPI in 100% working condition.

I'm still struggleing to find an answer to my problem....what i have noticed is that when i don't run the audio through an external soundcard i don't get glitches......
but i can't cue my tracks when DJing without usind my ESI's multiple outs.....
Can i???
Is anyone on this forum Using a Toshiba Sattlite Core 2 Dou with an external card and not having problems?? maybe it's just an issue with my specific set up and i could sort this out by just buying a new interface as oppose to a new laptop??

I'VE SORTED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just enabled the ASIO FOR ALL driver instead of the 1 that ships with my sound card and i works GREAT!!!!!!!! no glitches at all!!
I was at my wits end last night, i was even checking out my home contents insurance policy to see what i'd have to do to my laptop to get a new 1 paid for....i feel a little guilty for this but desperate times call for desperate measures!!!
.........does this make me a bad person???
who gives a fuck! i got there in the end
..GET IN!!!!!!!!!
