ok, you convinced me...
i'm quite busy now (as you may not have noticed with my presence on this forum), but this idea is good, and the "everybody contributes 2 samples" idea is great.
and i'm very curious about other ppl's techniques.
so i'd add one condition: i'd like that all the ppl who take part to it HAVE to give their .als, but only them will have access to it.
if someone who don't take part to the contest want to listen to the stuff, it will be mp3s.
so next time they'll want to participate, and we'll see some new techniques again. all benefit.

this will mean that more than a contest, it will be a "share your techniques" thing. which is much better IMO.

edit: about the samples, maybe we should care about using some non-copyrighted material, so that if ableton wants to do something with that, they don't get into troubles. (at least for the loops).
are drum loops authorized, or are the drums just supposed to be hits?

I agree with painseeker, we should use his sample packs this time.

Also, I suggest that you send a link for the sample pack to the declared participants via email or pm to conserve bandwidth.

And, painseeker, you should state the rules one final time to clarify.

count me in!

I read through this thread...what is the current state of play..is everyone to contribute 2 samples? And then once a certain number of samples are available, the best ones are decided by everyone and then zipped in a file to be distributed? What is the file size limit, was it 2 bars in length? Whats the sampling rate 44.1kHz 16Bit?

cool idea 8)

As I said before, you send me a mail ( [email protected] - Please write " Live contest" or similar in the subject ) , and I'll mail you the details ( where to download the samples, and a litte info about "when and what".
I believe the current state of play is as follows, all correct me if I am wrong.

A sample pack will be provided by painseeker.
All of the samples in the pack must be used in the track.
No other samples may be used.
Only Ableton plugins may be used.
The track must be made entirely in ableton.

I think that's about it.

Drop an email to painseeker to participate.

and i want to had this rule:

all the participants will have to make their .als file public to all other participants (and only to them).
so that more than a contest, it will be a "show your Live tricks" kind of thing...

Exactly! :D

Regarding people being able to download the als files. When everyone is done with their tune, they'll send the als file to me. I'll make a "als pack", and send a link around to the people who's been in the challenge. If you like to publish your own als file, then go ahead, but dont publish any of the other challengers work, unless they tell you to.

I'll start finding samples now, and upload them tonight. Everyone who's sent me a mail, will get a "challenge mail" with rules, download info etc.

Nice to see that some more people has joined the team. I can count 14 or so mails in my inbox now. I'm very excited to see the outcome of the challenge.

about the samples: maybe give us some unusual material, that'll make the outcome more interesting i guess...

what about the simpler/impuse btw. both have presets that use other samples (ofc..). are we allowed to use those presets or not? (i'd suggest not, but i guess someone has to ask)
yup.

It would probably be more interesting if all were constrained to creating Simpler and Impulse patches from the samplepack material.

Painseeker

How are we going to deal with any consolidated audio clips? I can't see how just the .als file can re-render what won't be there unless the finished tune is self contained before sending it to you. This will make a huge file that will probably be too large for someone like me on stoneage 56k skinnyband to send.

I'm soooo frustrated with my local telephone exchange, I've been waiting for broadband for bloody ages now and there's still no sign of it in the near future.

Do you have any thoughts on this?

maybe we should limit the project size? self-contained at no more than 5MB for example? i'm not on a 56k so i don't know what would be acceptable.

and maybe files of a certain size (say 1MB) should be mp3'd for distribution purposes, and then the user can re-.wav them to rebuild the song. the sound quality shouldn't really matter as it would just be to see how it's done.

and a quick question: are songs opened in l4 still openable in l3 if all that was done was playback, and no added features? i'd check but i dn't have l3 installed anymore

Hiveminded: Opening a L3 set in L4 will not affect it unless a save opperation is performed.
