Thanks to the OP, I had forgotten I picked up this CD a couple weeks back, and just popped it in this morning. Good stuff, doesn't really sound that dated to me, then again I'm not a huge fan.

Definitely like it better than Quaristice, though it had it's moments later on too.

Sure, broad genre's/descriptions are useful, dub, electronic, punk, etc, I quess I get tired of every micro genre invented. Someone tell me the major descriptive difference between 2 step, dubstep, new school breaks, etc. Bass, breaks, fx, chopped vocals...

and to Idontlikebroccoli:

I'm so jealous of the 2 disc version. I tried to get it, but ut must have sold out in an hour or 2!

Indeed it did. I'm surprised how lucky I was :P Let's just hope the bonus tracks are worth it.

Wow, a lot of replies! Thanks guys!

Please don't hate me if I heard the album for the first time after so many years. I was about 5 at the time, OK?

As for the "IDM" genre, I agree - it's very pretentious. However, I really like the music that people categorize as "intelligent" dance music. In my opinion (all you Tarnce fans, don't be hatin...) "Intelligent" dance music is sort of a higher level of electronic music - a more artistic use of computers and technology in music. Please don't hate me!

I've really gotta hear the rest of Autechre's stuff! What would you suggest next?

Thanks again. I love the Abe forum.

Don't worry about when you got into them. Its actually cool that you took to Incunabula, as its their first. I started with that back in '94.

Next for Autechre...

I'd say try them in sequential order. It will make their later more logical, and you can see their natural progression.

So, check their releases, but I'd go with Amber next for you.

You should check out the Ganz Graf EP and the album Draft 7:30. That should give you a taste of what autechre can really do.

So called IDM is not a "higher level" of electronic computer music. Its just a different style of electronic music.

In the very beginning IDM was meant to mean music that you could dance to in a club and also enjoy listening to at home like the Future sound of londons early stuff back in the day.

No one thats been in the electronic scene long seriously uses the term and most artists like Aphex twin and Autechre laugh at the term IDM nowadays.

Do a search on Warp Records for "Intelligent Dance Music IDM".

take it easy guys
I just went on a tirade today about the genre term "livetronica". Ugggghhhhh. For those that don't know, it's the term used to describe all the trance/house/jam bands that have been multiplying on that scene (e.g. STS9, Particle or "farticle" as I say, The New Deal, Pnuma Trio, etc.).

So, implicit in the term is that "electronica" has never been performed "live" before. Because that's totally true right. I mean who cares about the 60's, 70's, 80's, or 90's.

Fucking journalists and/or scenesters.

I'm gonna go listen to my rocktronica now and maybe dabble in a little trontronica. Abes is great for making trontronica.

Glad you finally found them. Now go check out Aphex and Squarepusher.
Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.
