Frankfurt Musik Messe?

Post by Timur » Fri Mar 07, 2008 10:20 am

Any reasons why I should go there? Will I learn/find anything new that I didn't already get from specs on the net or trying at a shop?

I still didn't buy me a mic/pre/converter combination and am curious about the latest developments of Cubase 4.1. Maybe I could even get news from Ableton concerning realistic plans on when Midi will work properly in Live 7?

On the other hand I'd have to drive 250km to Frankfurt, pay lots of money just to get in and be bombarded by over 100 dB SPL noise overcrowded and airless halls...

Hehe, don't tease me devil!

Anyway, I'm in need of mostly basic stuff for digital recording and computer based effects, so no gadgets at the moment.

I don't even own a camera, hehe. 8) It's not that I don't want one, but I'm not willing to pay money for any cheesy plastics and didn't get enough money together for some real deal yet that I wouldn't want to put into music-stuff first.

i got two canon eos350d's they are excellent value!
same with the newer eos400

(both dslr's)

save up for one of them :)
heck they are good enough to do semi prof. (i even know prof. photographers who work with them) work with when it comes to album covers if you want

you will not go wrong with this camera..

In the department of entry-level DSLR I would most likely go for Nikon's D40 (best bang for the bucks) or some current Pentax or Olympus. In Canon's line I'd directly go for a 40D, gotta love that Live-View for extremly strange angled shots like these:

Hm, are we talking Photokina now?

the live view is a thing i thought i would miss, but figured for good shots i don't miss it at all :D

the canon 40d looks great. The nikon would probably suit you too :)

but i'd defiently recommend an slr instead of the ordinary things. its just more fun + you look good when as a tourist you're walking around with one :P

I'm mostly interested in portrait and shots macro shots. But anyway, first comes music gear, cameras have to wait.

On my list:

- Neumann TLM 103 (some love it, some hate it, I tried it on my voice and it fits well).
- Audio-Technica 4050 (sounds different to the above and offers three patterns for a good price if you buy from the US, they're are way overpriced in Germany just like the Neumanns).
- SM7B and/or RE20, mostly out of curiosity, no chance to test them, so I guess I have to go the blind-date path.
- Fireface 800 (best compromise out of all my needs, good converters, althought the FF400 offers better pre-amps). I'm seriously thinking about getting a digital mixer as an alternative though, maybe coupled with a HDSP (like 9652 or Digiface).
- some channel-strip for vocal, guitar and bass recordings and later for live-vocals (I ran the TLM 103 through a DBX channel-strip when I tested it at the store, but I'm tempted to buy the couple of a TLM 103 (EA1+Alu case) + Avalon VT737 that is offered by one american guy, which still is cheaper than buying the TLM 103 Alu alone in Germany).
- Yamaha Kompass APX900
- some Roland V-Drums module or SPD-20 plus pads and foot-machine
- Cubase 4.1

See, lots of gear to buy, no money left for playing around with pictures.

i am waiting for cubase to arrive in the mail at the moment, there is a few things i don't like in the live mixer also for other tasks. I got cubase 4 recomended so bought an used copy (that is certainly a good idea. you can save 70% or so of the money, and its fully upgradable. just be sure you don't purchase from some idiot who don't know if he got the full version, take pic aproval. i bought it from one narrowing down his studio a bit to fewer computers and had a license on top. He also helped me with the microphone issues, found him at kvr. )

400$ with sending. with original box, dongle, manuals, cd's etcettera. Fully upgradable @steinberg, just like if you bought it in the store.

Steinberg offers a competitive upgrade version of Cubase 4 that includes Live users. I did not find any used version in Germany yet that saves much money compared to the competivie upgrade (plus you can return the new purchase if it doesn't please you).

i chose not to get the competetive upgrade because i never figured if i would have to drop my live license.
An "upgrade" is when you replace a product with a newer version of that same product. When you make an upgrade of the same product from one company to the other, you are making a "competitive upgrade".
and i will for nothing in the world give up session view :)

Me neither (as soon as Midi works), you don't have to let your Live licence go, the competitive upgrade just means that you get a full Cubase version for the price of an upgrade version because you own a full copy of a competitive product (which can you keep using).

You fool! *bonkshead* ;)
