the technique is mainly perseverance
and session drums.
I made an 'old' sounding kit with the multi-mic Session drums, knocked up a 4 bar loop in session by copying the swing off an old drum loop and then when it came to do this mix I used that liveclip as a basis to expand upon. I simply did the swing by ear BTW, by moving the hits using ctrl and drag to get them off the grid.
I'm not actually sure that any of the original 4 bars survived, but that's sort of how I got the shuffle on.
When I make the larger drum sections I tend to program everything in Arrangement and play the track and it sort of becomes apparent to me what the imaginary drummer in my head wants to happen at each particular point, so I go into the pattern in arrange and slip a ghost hit in , or a quick flam - just to make it a little less robotic.
Nothing magical.
