Can LIVE replace my other recording software???

Post by aelo » Sun Dec 16, 2001 5:48 pm

I'm currently using Digital Performer 3 and I'm wondering if LIVE could replace it for studio usage aswell as live use. The kind of music I make involves very little looping and mostly one time sound clips and a small amount of MIDI recording. The only FX I would use would probably be reverb and time-stretching (which LIVE would be great for).

If I've been too vague as to my needs for using it, please go on the basis of other people who use it to replace Cubase, Logic, DP3, Protools, etc.

Live will change the way you work. Try using it on a project and see what you think. You might like it better, you might now. It's certainly possible to record tradition album projects in Live:

Things about Live I like better than Digital Performer:

1) Smoother layout. If you're used to working with Piano roll midi clips, they are much easier to work with in Live.

2) No slow screen redraws.

3) No need to manage multiple floating windows.

4) Live does not require a seperate midi track and an insutrment track for virtual synths.

5) Native support for both VST and AU. DP still works best with MAS plugins and is finicky with some AU plugins. No VST support natively.

You don't have to switch to OS X if you want to use Live 4. You can stay OS 9. Live projects are interchangable between Mac and PC.

All i can say is that i've been a big Logic user for years - and although i had a brief 'affair' with Reason - i am completely blown away by Live 4. After using the Live 4 demo for a few hours i decided i had to have it.
Its not just another sequencer - its a damn revelation !!

Download the 4.0.2 demo and do the tutorial 'lessons' included in the browser.
This is all it takes to really see the brilliance of this programme.

:D

Live may not be the ideal tool to do Pro mixing, multi-tracking or mastering audio (i have Logic for those tasks) but for using loops with midi, writing, composing, inspiration and - best of all - playing "Live" (which is new to me) - nothing touches Live 4.

I just have a feeling it will make DP3 look very dated !!

Go and buy a copy immediately !! !!

You can thank me later.

PS: I dont work for the Abletons !!

Beat_Master's post is spot on. I've had an identical experience (coming from years with Cubase). In summary:

1. Live is unique and revolutionary. You need to spend time with it to "get it". Do that and you will be hooked. And that's a good thing!
2. Get the demo, do the tutorials, and play around with it. Give it at least 3-4 hours before making a decision.
3. Logic/Cubase/etc. are better for some things, particularly mixing and mastering.
4. You can't sync to video with Live.
5. For writing, jamming, and inspiration, Live is so far ahead of every other sequencer that it lives in a different universe.
6. Using Live, you will get twice as much work done in half the time.

For what you're doing, you shouldn't need anything more than Live. Just try it out and see!

Can LIVE replace my other recording software???

The only correct answer to this question is when its asked by you rhetorically.

In other words, try it and find out for yourself.

Why use a telephone when you can email? Different tools for different purposes. Why not use alle software together after a while you can decide to use the phone or to do your communication with email!
