I'm returning the Novation Nocturn

Post by Aton » Thu Jul 03, 2008 5:19 am

I preorderd this thing months ago and I'm a bit disappointed. What good is automap if the knob moves won't be recorded on Live. I might as well put the money towards the Bitstream 3x... I might have kept it if there was an led display of which page number I was on.

is this a "can't record automation in session view" problem?
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

As far as I know, you have to Midi-Map the parameter and cannot record automation via Automap.
You can always record the audio output, but of course this leads to uncorrectable user error (much like playing a non-MIDI instrument).

Yeah, I just bought a Remote SL 25 -- it doesn't record in Session view, but neither does any other controller that uses automation. If you absolutely need control in session, use one of the standard MIDI templates...

I'm pretty happy with the Novation, actually, titbag. I wasn't promised anything that it cannot do. I'm not feeling letdown.

hey, did the Nocturn come with a warranty card? I can't find one and if it did, I need to include it in the box or I will be charged a restocking fee.

This is an ableton problem, not novation. Using automap is the same as assigning midi cc's to ableton's device parameters - you can't record automation in session no matter what controller you use.

The only way is to midi learn knobs to parameters of a plug-in. You have to use the plug-ins own midi learn, not ableton's. And this can be done with any controller that sends midi cc, including the nocturn.

Agreed. I'll have to check out the Novation with Cubase. I gave up Cubase for a while for other reasons, but am curious to see if these changes could be recording without specific mapping on Cubase 4. Anyone know if the other DAW's have this limitation that Ableton has?

BTW. Non-VST (Ableton plug-ins--Filter, EQ-8, etc.) are not recordable without Midi-mapping.

It DOES record VST automation into arrangement.
But it needs to be a VST parameter that Live can automate which is only the first 128. The Nocturn handles 2048 VST parameters.
