I find this interesting as many of the Wintel machines between 2.8 - 3.2Ghz are around 25% and have over 256MB ram. Seems like the G5 is holding up quite well especially considering Live doesn't really use the second CPU very much. This is encouraging. :)

Newly self built custom system:

1) 17-19%
2) Amd FX-53 skt939
3) XP SP1
4) 2.4ghz with 1MB L2 Cache
5) 1024 - Corsair TwinX DDR400
6) Digidesign 002 Rack
7) 2x 74GB WD Raptor 10,000 RPM (Raid 0)

Overall i rekon its around a 35% increase than my old system. Its mad how many plugins I can now load. I saved a song that I was working on which was at 84% in my old system (athlon 3200+, 7200rpm HD) and the system was pretty slow for what i needed. Now its at 50% and much smoother. I dont get my system grindin to a halt anymore which at the time was very frustrating..8O

if anybody can suggest how i can significantly improve on this,
they will recieve the prize....
Upgrade to xp sp2, I went from 28 to 25 percent when I upgraded, sooo it's a 10 percent speed increase ;)
thanx Machinate!!!

Wow if you're hitting 50% with AMD's fastest "enthusiast" offering, your methods must be really demanding. What motherboard are you using? Have you considered overclocking? i think the FX-53 is the only new 64 bit chip with an unlocked multiplier, which basically encourages overclocking as long as you can regulate the temperatures.

Hi Adam,

I do like to run multiple synths/effects which some took up 30% in my old amd 3200+ but 10% now :) . Im using the Asus A8V deluxe (wireless version). When actually running ableton under heavy cpu load without any overclocking its around 43'c... I have tried overclocking using the features in bios (AI Overclocking), got it to around 2600mhz but the temperatures were to high for my liking...about 64'c (heavy cpu load) using the supplied heatsink. (it was stable though) It increased performance by only 2-3% under ableton. I will probably stick to standard for the moment as upgrading has cost me far too much so far.....

give clockgen a try:
http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php

since its software based, you can OC on an as needed basis. also you can adjust the core voltage, which is what i do to keep temps down when i bump my A64 3000 to 3200, it remains stable and i can even get it cooler @ 3200 under heavy load than @ stock settings under heavy load.

Thanks. I'll give it a go :D software based is probably the best option like you say (instead of bios) for that extra bit of juice when needed - and control over Vcore.

Cheers :)

G5

Post by raapie » Tue Oct 12, 2004 12:48 pm

I am interested to find out if people are having problems with a noisy-fan and hum on the their soundcard. Some people using a dual G5 seems to have these problems while others don't. The hum-power issue is an old one so I suspect Apple has changed the power-adapter for the new G5's. Noise might not be an issue on the water-cooled G5's.

Please tell me more... my orange iMac is too old for any work at all... I am considering to spend some money on this guy Jobs...

i got my g5 yesterday. so far i can say it's more silent then my old g4 imac or g4 powermac. I did get the hiss with previous macs but the g5's built in outputs and a m-audio fw-410 give pretty clean sound now.
I cant comment for other devices though.

Also, when recording with the built-in s/pdif i/o i get very low latency.
i can go down to 2ms + 2ms = 4ms at 64 samples. i can go lower but i stopped there. (i believe limit is 32 samples)

Performance is also wonderfull. (i have a dual 1,8 with 256mb ram)
i noticed a big difference in sets i used to max out with.

cheers

Yeah, if i'm not mistaken i believe all the latest models are watercooled.
You practicly only hear the vent at startup. the fan of my external HD makes more noise then the g5 overall.

Hi,
I built it because then you know your getting top quality reliable components (if you research compatibility/reviews), and its exactly for your needs. Also sometimes its cheaper to build your own as well

only the 2.5GHz models are water-cooled.
