IF YOU THE AMERICAN PEOPLE STILL WANT A GOVERNMENT BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE. THEY CAN STILL HAVE IT.
Now.
Do we want it?
Sure they can still have it, but that means sweat and blood. Voting in Obama will not mean the citizens of the US will have a government by and for the people.
I do not argue that voting is meaningless, but it is only 1 step. Any individual step on a long journey is not meaningless in the context of the journey. However, if you only take one step, there is no journey.
The US has a history of people fighting for and winning rights that today are taken for granted. People of character and substance shed blood and died for the right to organize unions, a 40 hour workweek, overtime pay, fair wages, the right to not be fired for no reason, health care, worker safety. People fought for the right to speak freely, to assemble freely, the right to a lawyer and to face ones accuser, the right to a speedy trial, and a trial by a jury of ones peers.
Now we are in a time where these rights are eroding before our eyes. People have forgotten their history, and seemingly their backbone.
Obama seems to have some conscience, but no matter what good intentions he might have, he will not be able to accomplish much unless there are a lot of people willing to put their ass on the line, to risk their job, shed some blood, take some lumps.
My impression is that too many people hope that change will come without them having to roll their sleeves up and get dirty. It is the power of a determined citizenry that can oppose runaway corporate power and greed, not a single man sitting in the White House.
SO yes, please vote, and please do more than that!
