Let's just say that people should use the OS they are most comfortable with, because at the end of the day, the OS should feel like it's not even there. for me, this is XP...not vista, not osx, not linux, but that MY OPINION. For each of us, it's different.
As for Ableton, they have a right to maximize their profits as they see fit, and where that profit margin intersects most with users is where we will see development. Once that intersection is found, the highest obligation is to those customers who can most benefit at that point. All others are ultimately secondary, as dictated by market forces.
peace... no point to argue, really.
just being a human, and the reason why i press sometimes for a "dictatorship" regarding the support for a certain OS above another is that, i moved a few month ago back to my hometown berlin and getting for the time being into something related to my original job, which is being a soundengineer...
for time being i work for a technical event supply company which does sometimes productions but is highly specialised and one of the worlds top leading know how companies in the domain of wireless systems, special sound applications, communication solutions for events, intercom and the like. we ship and sell our knowledge and equipment on a daily basis all over the world.
VW, Mercedes, Siemens makes an event or Madonna, Pink Floyd, The Roots, having a concert, you bloody name it they will have/use some technology provided by us.
therefore we are very close to a lot of professional companies producing certain technologies (equipment to be precise)... used in situations where there is no excuse.. for not working 100%
none, whatsoever... or can you imagine a Madonna concert in a stadium 80.000 people plus paying a shitload of money and suddenly no sound, e.g. ???
to get back to the initial point... most of the software based systems, in our days nearly all of them involved are based on unix, OSX and linux, only some shit everyone hates in this business is supporting XP, none vista... not on this level... and there IS a CLEAR reason for it.
MIDAS e.g. (in case it does say something to you) has set on linux to develope there new consoles the XL8 and Pro6 and the editors will be on OSX...
this says everything!!!
but hey i do understand that i talk and come from a different level, please don't mistake that as arrogance... it's just the way it is... therefore i have a different opinion...
and what dom said is TRUE that is why most (and it's a pain in the ass that not all!!!) serious professional companies who have to deliver reliability under any circumstances use unix, osx, linux based software.
end.
and sorry, just being human and had the need to explain why i am in faver to vanish Windows from the world of professional audio / audio related applications.
any REAL idea how much a restart costs in this business?... and that is very unfortunately not a joke!
