It's a sore point with me - there certainly are more than enough dead acts out there.

Gaspard, next time: plus le Bande du Gaffer! :D
Yeah, I've managed to knock a midi cable out of one of my faderfoxes before, mid set... I'm sure I had a similarly daft look on my face as I struggled to understand why it had stopped working

i imagine that if someone were really wanting to mime, they would make a point of making everything appear as plugged in as possible - especially in the EDM world, where half the people at the show are there to ogle their gear.

unlike the olden days...

You know, I'ma also give these guys the benefit of the doubt... Maybe the scarier looking of the dudes was using the only working mixer, while the other, scruffier looking dude, practiced his knob and slider movements, before he got his turn to play with the connected mixer...

Like in baseball.

Before you go to the plate to face the pitcher, you stand in the on deck circle, and practice your swings... It's not like you're faking it.. You're just swinging to get your swing on...

When using the midi outs, you need to also have a power supply in that thing no?
Or could he have been using a USB cable to power it/control something, and the USB has come out?

Yeah, cables pop out, it happens. I can't count how many times as a guitar player that a cable has come out of my rig! And, the professional thing to do for your audience is to keep up the show, not all of a sudden look completely perplexed and start going "Oh, shit!" on stage. You keep up the show and calmly try and figure it out. It's just unfortunate when a photo gets snapped at that moment!

Now, on to those www.deadact.com vids. I just watched the first 2, and I have to say, that's pretty much why so many people hate on electronic/DJ whatevers. 2 minutes of hand pumping and swaying around like your surfing, nothing looks douchier or more lacking in talent than that shit.
