Recording that hot with a soundcard's built-in pre-amp is probably THE worst advice you can give to someone new. That only makes you look like a newbie yourself, even if you're not. It's one of the biggest myths in history of digital recording!
Please educate yourself a bit googling for "recording levels" for instance. You may also read my posts in this thread for a brief explanation:

To the OP: I can't help you with your soundcard, but you should explain what you mean with "acceptable volume level". My guess is that your levels are either already too loud (yes, I just said too loud) or perfectly fine...

being in the game for more than a decade i've met numerous folks where "recieve - give back" just doesn't work out at all.
of course, point for me is that your action will come back to you... it's not one to one all the time.
also, helping someone who just had 2 post in total... (this question here was his second one) i think is OK, if he really uses a crack and keeps on asking a hundred times for support then something called common sense (at least at some age you should develope that sense) should kick in...
let's just leave it as is.
and by the way i am curious about the outcome of the e-mail you send to him...

quite funny to ask " did you steal the program?".
I think you have to answer this kind of questions when you visit the USA. A very special American logic, like "he might be a terrorist, but I don't suppose he's a liar, that would be unfair..."

Just wanted to point out that your venomous posts on this thread have focused on nothing other than insulting me with name-calling multiple multiple times. I'm wondering if you thought for a second (likely not) that during that time, you've not only NOT helped the OP at all, but also given him a great first impression of the vile nature of the forum. Thanks for all of that. You great great guy.
I'd *hug* you, but I don't have time to take the requisite shower afterwards.
Also, feel free to slew whatever subshit you will from your moral high horse. I promise you, I won't be reading it.
Have a SubWonderful day.
yes i did call you names, there are times where it is absolutely appropriate to do, even for a civilized man.

@ the OP: RTFM!

oops, yeah apologies at this point.
@ OP, be a bit more precise with your next question...
a bit more detailed description of what / how your are recording. that would help to help you.

Here's a quick overview of the Fast Track mic input:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPIYjbx5DbQ
It might be your gain is too low, it might be you are too far away from the mic, it also might be that the preamp and mic are not 'matched' well.
You night just need to turn up the clip volume in Ableton after recording.
This should be simple, but yes, more details would help. Describe your session as if you wanted someone to be able to recreate your exact situation from scratch.

I know what your saying, though as i have the fast track pro i just found that i had to run the pots on the inputs at roughly 70% to get a good balance. Bit like when you run and mp3 player into an amp; too high on the player and it distorts...too low and it looses definition. Not an engineer by any means, just what ive found over the years...all a case of balance.
sure theres some text book stuff with numbers n formulae but i use my ears is all...

3 pages and no mention of the utility plug in?
maybe I'm just lazy but when a mic or guitar signal comes in too low (as they often do) I just boost it with the utility plug in and listen to it. this also raises the noise in the recording but rarely enough for me to care about it.
In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?

I can see both sides of the argument concerning not wanting to help somebody using a pirated copy of a program that somebody capable of offering help has paid a decent stack of bills for. On the same token, up until a year ago I was knee deep in cracked software myself.....it's funny though, when you can download and use virtually every piece of software out there you barely have time to scratch the surface of anything, buying a product creates a loyalty to a product and a commitment to make it a worthwhile investment, at least for me.
I had 150 gigs of mp3's I had downloaded, and any vst I could find....on my cracked version of xp and I have to say, since I made the personal decision a year ago to only use things I legally own I get more done with less. You can waste a lot of time sorting through often unstable cracked versions of products.
I think it is rare to find somebody like Robert Henke, somebody at the head of a company that honestly seems more interested in the vision of a product rather than becoming the enemy of anything out there that might draw away from the companies bottom line. I stumbled into this forum a little over a year ago, at the time using a lite version Live that came with a soundcard.....I bought the Suite a couple months later, but also dabbled with a pirated copy of Live that opened my eyes to the tons of features in the full version.
This is a great forum, I've learned a ton from many of you and I think it's cool to see so many wander in randomly with so many people willing to take time and show somebody the ropes.
I wonder just how many people out there took the warez to forum to legit Live owner route?
