What has audio recording got to do with midi sequencing? Not everyone works the way you do. Why would I want to record audio into clips?

By the way Live wasn't designed to do midi, it didn't come in until version 4.

you could say that midi has been in for 5 of the 8 releases and should be buttoned down by now and that Live as an audio only tool is the minority case.

native plug ins behave one way, third party plug ins behave another, that's wrong. is it an important missing feature? well, it impacts recording knob tweaks in session view, sounds important to me.

the Abes know what's up, it's not like they don't use or love their own products. this is going to replace the '128 parameter limit' rant.

I was responding to point 2 below, I don't agree with point 1 either, this is essential to the way I want to work with live, and IMO needs fixing asap.

1) not essential
2) session view was not really created for midi sequencing

With the utmost respect I recommend you follow your own advice and re-read my post yourself. Can you honestly say you are offended?
Hu? I guess you misunderstood what i wrote, i'm not offended at all - i would not be the right one for this job if i was offended by you posting critic thoughts or your view about what our product should be.
I was talking about the words you and McQ where shooting at each other.
McQ already removed the street language, would be nice if you could do so, too.

Cheers,
Dom
I apologize to you if things got out of hand and I think there's no need to labor over this point any further. I assure you, had it not been for McQ's childish insult none of this would have been necessary - but that is no excuse. I should have refrained. With that said, this place (forum) is rife with this kind of confrontation and I was sick of it. I'm glad to see there are plenty of logical minds here who understand the nature of my complaint.

The biggest reason why I evangelize Ableton Live is for it's revolutionary session view. It is the ultimate compositional scratch pad! When I demonstrate it's capabilities to the uninitiated they are always excited! But eventually the subject always comes up - "why can't I record my modulations to session view midi clips?" I can't tell you how many times I've heard "It would be so helpful if you could do that!"

No need to apologize, at least not to me - check out the code of behavior and correct the language in your post, just like McQ did and everything is fine:

Argh. I'm trying to do the edits. Stand by (whilst Ableton server errors pop up)

so let me get this straight... midi sequencing and automation can be done but only in arrangement view... is this correct? but you want to be able to record clips of midi automation in session view so that you can save/copy/ paste them elsewhere to different parts of a song or apply them to different loops? and it is too much trouble to record automation in arrangement view? then save those to use elsewhere in the project or other projects?

You could broaden your horizons a bit.

Look, not all of us presequence our material. Some of us are brave enough to start with completely blank sets and record everything from improvised performances.

The arrangement view? What's that? Some us are completely live performers who build linear arrangements from improvised performances. Even before midi was introduced in Live, this was the prevailing attitude toward using Live.

If you've had experience with any decent hardware midi sequencers (Emu Command Station, Yamaha's, even the Electribes) this is simply old hat. Sequences without modulation are B O R I N G. And playing them in is FAR superior to drawing them within the editor.

Why don't you try a different DAW or way of working then?

You're obviously not going to 'get what you want' in this version, yeah? Even with the time I've spent writing this post, I could have made a 2 bar bassline... ;)

if it takes a major rewrite to get session automation in live, i hope all this new stuff doesn't push the likeliness of ever seeing session automation even further away.

when i first realized you couldn't record this stuff way back in v1 i was sure i was doing something wrong.

8O Wow! What an insight!!!

You're a genius! Why didn't someone suggest this before?!! :?

Seriously, this "take it or leave it" nonsense is laughable!

Judge and insult me all you want. I (and many others) will continue to rant and moan until this situation changes. Actually YOU can 'take or leave' my opinion of which I am 100% steadfast.
