Mousewheel support for VST/VSTi and zoom

Post by grymmjack » Thu Jan 01, 2009 6:33 pm

For the love of pete!

Mousewheel support for VST/VSTi plugins would be a dream come true.

Mousewheel to zoom in and out (without requiring Vitamin L) would be even better!

Why is it that Live is such a wickedly great application but fails to handle the most simple thing like a mousewheel?

Orion does this with absolutely no problem, even in plugins that are notoriously horrible for mousewheel support like SampleTank.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix mousewheel support to work :(

...you know, ingenious kids often have a turn to be a bit autistic :?

in fact, the only way i can explain to myself this and other obvious shortcomings of Live:

Programming DAWs is probably the hardest programming task at all. It's as *REAL TIME* as it can be, and if you count by the nanoseconds there is little air left to do anything else. So they bypass a lot of the usual Operating-System stuff in favour of a very tight system of their own.
Unfortunatly this leads to a very conservative approach, just *DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING* which migth be even remotely critical!
No Mousewheel, no MIDI-Programchanges, no more than 128 parameters and so on ...
(..or may be they are locked in, because one of the responsible programmers has left ....)

I have to say I don't like zooming with the wheel. I really like the way it is (drag in the "tempo line" obove the arrange and pull down/up. works great for me.

I want my wheel for other stuff.

yes, so do i, i want my wheel for other stuff. For the most obvious of all, editing the controls of the GUI.

The sliders, knobs, selectors. The things you do a trillion times!
I mean, how do you edit a slider or a knob in Live right now?

1. you point on it with the mouse, which means: move your arm
2. you click on it with the mouse, which means: move your finger back and forth
3 you drag it up or down to the desired value, which means: move your arm

instead of 2. and 3. you could as easily just scroll the wheel, which means; just move your finger, ... somewhat!

And, you know, its just so much easier to move just a finger, than to move the whole arm, is'nt it? :)

Add a right-click to switch between scrolling in large increments and scrolling in fine steps and you're done.

And remember, you do that a trillion times, so how much RSI (repetitive strain injury ) could be prevented with just this simple thing?
So, come on Abes, move your braincells !

Yes, Please...!

I'm now about 1 year old, in Live years. In learning how to get around this amazing Sequencing Instrument, I've asked myself many times how come I can't move these controls with the mousewheel. But, being a noob, I figured it was probably supposed to be that way, and that I should be spending more time with a controller, and less time with a mouse.

Only that, after a year, I'm settling into a workflow that is pretty mouse-intensive, and not so much with controllers. Lots of quality time with Live's devices...with Operator...with the tiny little sliders and their tiny little numbers.

It seems a shame not to be able to change these controls by rolling my finger. It would be a very welcome addition if it ever appeared. :D

I've got one of these ergonomic touchpads... http://www.ergonomictouchpad.com/ergono ... QgodzXo1mQ

Just double-tap the pad then move your finger up/down to adjust the value!
