Shortcut keys

Post by christiankelly » Thu Jan 08, 2009 6:27 pm

one of things I'm really likeing about ableton is the shortcut keys for everything and now easy they are to discover. Anyway I found that Ctl+Alt+P brings up the plugins for a track. but it dosn't always work. If I have VSTs or whatever on a track and I click on that track and press the Ctl+Alt+P sometimes it brings up the plugins but sometimes it does not. Is that normal or just a bug?

There does seem to be a certain ramdom factor with crtl+alt+p. Maybe something to do with window focus?
BTW Do you (or anybody else) have a complete list of shortcuts? i.e. alt+up etc

yeah I guess it's a bug... it woudl be REALLY nice that if you were on the track in any view and hit clt+alt+P it would open up the plugins... right now I have try it and if it dosn't work which is like 60% of the time then I have to "Shift Tab" and open them manuely.

btw it works a bit strangely in Live. When you first add a plugin to a track it opens the plugin window (if you have this set to auto in the prefs).
Then if you press ctrl-alt-p it will hide the plugin and you see the little wrench icon in the device title bar go to a shade of white/grey.
If you press ctrl-alt-p again it will open again like it should.

However, if you had closed the plugin window using the mouse, either by clicking on the plugin's own close button or by clicking the wrench icon, you'll see the plugin window closing and the wrench icon going to a darker shade of grey. And now it's impossible to re-open te plugin using the key command!

I really don't know why and it's quite annoying. You have remember to always use only the key command for closing plugins or you won't be able to re-open them using the key command.

also why does it have to be ctrl-alt-p. Why not just P? it's not like it's reserved for anything else. All these ctrl-shift-alt-key combinations are doing my head in.

One of my favourites - Page up/Page down for large increments/decrements, stopped working in an earlier version of 7 and I don't think it's been fixed (though I haven't tried .14).

I'm a great fan of keyboard shortcuts. Looking forward to seeing what the new ones related to the MIDI editor are.

I have to say, this is one area where Reaper really excels. After having the ability to make almost any kind of keybinding or custom macro action imaginable, it's hard to go back to a closed (and often unintuitive) system like Ableton's.

Huh? One of the strange things about Ableton is why we can´t have shortcuts for things we should have shortcuts for. Third-part programmers are even trying to make up for this.

+1 for more keyboard shortcuts, and for users to be able to define their own. Even better would be macro key commands :D

When you have used a tracker like Renoise you appreciate how much can be done with just a plain old QWERTY keyboard.
