here is the short answer

its all about the accents and velocity.

a good multi sampled snare works best..

i think it really helps to get a drum pad and some sticks and practice the rudiments.
its very addictive and you'll be able to translate from your head to machine better.

it would have multiple velocity layers.

it would have a sample of someone playing softer loaded into to a lower velocity layer and playing harder for a higher velocity... the more samples the more realistic it sounds and the more expressive you can be.

also having a left and right snare hit helps allot because they have a slight difference in sound pending on what hand you use.

you can trick it by using velocity (which will usually also control the volume) and setting up a second snare with a slight tweak to give it a different sound.. but not to much.. the difference is barley noticeable.

it also depends if your going for realism or not.
sometimes i like that machine gun when i do a roll.

another approach is to use beat repeat or an arp.

Have you tried looking in the Drums folder of the Midi Effect Rack?
Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.
