hmm...dont know - I would have thought it would have to be - especially if we use the name 'Ableton Live aid' - could you not remix it in live?sweetjesus wrote:not trying to blow my trumpet, but I'm a pretty competent designer and I would be happy tohelp with the artwork and also donating a track.

BTW my 2c on the track if you'd like to hear it - I really like the main groove - bass and percussion and then with the pads at about 1.30 - reminds me a little of leftfield - personally the high synth riff would drive me crazy - quite grating - maybe if you took the main groove into Live and allow it to develop a bit more, sack the grating synth and allow the bit with the pads to build more it could be a really nice emotive track, the synth riff kills the best bits - like having a nice sunset over a pristine beach on a warm evening with a big fuck off insect that keeps buzzing round your head
Like I said, just my 2 cents
that could be a really cool bit to have in thereAmberience wrote:I'd like to donate a track I composed. Not just as some exposure for myself, but also as a message to whomever listens to it.

I used a sample by William S. Burroughs talking about his thoughts on the atom bomb, and a TV documentary he saw on it.
The sample itself is probably illegal, but I don't care. His words are too important to be dismissed as theft on my part.
- the question is - who's going to mix the CD? I'd definitely be happy to take it on but I dont have any mixing credits on my resume - I have used Live pretty much exclusively for production but I'm confident I could do it justice and would be happy to do it, but failing that I would have thought Adam Jay would be a good contender if up for it - consider that my nomination??
AFAIk they provide pressing, printing and distribution, but I havent personally checked it out - I understood you just send one CD and they do the rest as and when people order itct43 wrote:Forge, this CD baby thing looks interesting, seems as if you have to provide all the CD's though, or am I reading it wrong? Hey Rahlo - just checked out your site - nice stuff man! cant believe I didnt check it out before! - I hear so much shit hip-hop these days that I've got a bit blinkard which is a shame cause what you're doing is wicked so there must be others i'm missing too - I grew up on hip-hop in the 80s and 90s and one thing that's pissed me off about alot of the newer stuff that makes the radio is it seems to be more about the MCs ego and less about the groove - I always wanted the beats!rahlo wrote:Yo, mos def count me in. I can do a new track or rhyme on a track if somebody needs an emcee.
I reckon your track New World order would be wicked for the CD! especially that bit at the start
maybe a remix for the purpose?
I'm thinking I might dig out my first release if the label lets me and remix it - kind of makes sense if we've got tracks that are already out to somehow use them again if they did ok - at the end of the day we want to sell as many copies as possible to raise money as well as awareness

Even though im sure Adam would do a good job, I think that the proposed CD would work better if it wasent mixed, or maybe it could be a double CD one mixed & one unmixed. The other thing I was going to say was, do you think you would be able to use the track with the speech in it? Wouldnt you have to get clearance?forge wrote:that could be a really cool bit to have in thereAmberience wrote:I'd like to donate a track I composed. the main reason I suggested a mix was purely because it means bits of some people's contributions may be able to be used if the whole track maybe wouldnt work as well - but in any case...the following makes far more sense.....
I just got a reply from Robert Henke ...I'll just paste it in...
As Robert has also very kindly offered http://www.imbalance.de as a host it could really get things moving -
I think it might still be worth looking into CD baby as I think they handle the Pressing & Distribution and Printing etc taking their costs aftersales so it might not cost anything but still give the option for a CD - but as an addition to Roberts suggestion if they are interested - but ct43 contacted them so let's just see how that goes
IN the mean time, if anyone has any submissions to offer then PM or email me and I'll either work out with robert where to upload them to or forward to him, (dont want to bombard him with emails just yet as it was our idea so I'll take the brunt!)

that's the best way forward so far - I've PMed sweetjesus as he offered his design skills so maybe he could work on the front end page...instead of making a CD which cost loads of money and is time consuming
i would suggest you collect a bunch of tracks from the artists which
are willing to contribute and put them on a website. Include a link to
the organisation(s) you want to support and suggest that everyone who`s
downloading the tracks should at least donate 10 EUR / USD to that
organisation(s).
The participants could link or mirror this site. I personally would be
willing to submit an unreleased monolake track. I could also offer the
(unnuesed) imbalance computer music domain ( http://www.imbalance.de )
as one host for the download.
I cannot promise that ableton would feature it without talking to the
other guys but this is how i would do it.

One of my labels just tanked, the other is still about 3 releases back in the queue so putting it on my label is somewhat unrealistic right now.forge wrote:
So how we going to do this? Adam you've got a catalogue as long as my arm - does that mean you're fairly well connected on the distribution front ? Do you, or does anyone else have a label they want to put it on?
I could definitely shop it to distributors if need be, though keep in mind my contacts are very techno/house specific. Other than Watts, which is the only one with a wide range of genres they distribute, the Dists i use are Rhythmic in NYC, and subsequently Intergroove in Frankfurt, Germany. They are also more vinyl-centric, so perhaps someone else with more of a repetoire in CD Distribution has another avenue we could explore?
Sales for vinyl AND CD have been shit though. Certainly this Compilation would give excellent opportunity for the CD to be successful, but it would still have to battle a totally crappy market right now.
The last benefit project i was involved with consisted of three 12" 4-track EP's, and then a Mixed Compilation CD that used all of the vinyl tracks plus some bonus tracks. I beleive the average # of vinyl sales was 750 records per release, and the CD barely made it to 500 copies. In the end not much money was given to the cause at all.
I'm certainly willing to help with making some calls regarding distribution on this project, but i am afraid that my connections wouldn't do the project much justice. To really be successful, in my opinion, the project would have to net at least 100% of the money invested into it. That is, a 100% return. Anything less than that and it would have been a better idea to just give the money that would have been invested in the project in the first place. Where alot of benefits are about "awareness", this cause i think is more about action. The monetary donation itself outweighs the project. The end is more important than the means.
I think to truley make the project succeed, the CD would have to be pushed by everyone, grassroots style. as in every gig an artist on the CD has, the CD needs to be available for sale. Perhaps the Laptopapalooza Tour '05 could sell them as well. And the CD would most definitely have to be available from the Ableton Online SHOP, which means they need to sign off on it. Also, a website would have to be established, i can host it if need be, but the domain would have to be arranged, and an ordering system as well - Don't forget manpower of taking, filling, and shipping the orders.
The old model of manufacture and send it to the distributor / they do all the rest, has gone out when this global recession hit. So its really the whole hog or nothing.
What i, personally, can contribute is a Track (of course), 50MB webspace with unlimited bandwidth, and pitching the CD to Watts/Rhythmic/Intergroove.
and on another note, considering the vast range of artists we have interested in the project, i also think the project should be a single cd, compilation - not mixed. It would be truley difficult to transition from Rahlo to Amberience to all the other artists, etc.
And on another 'nother note... what would you guys think of making it an MP3 CD ? i.e. Data CD? This would allow for 349 Minutes of 256kbps MP3 Audio. If the average track length is 5 minutes and 30 seconds... 63 TRACKS!!! could be fit onto an MP3 CD.
Theres a group here in Indianapolis that does an MP3 CD for "indianapolismusic.net" and it allows them to showcase far more tracks, and these days, in the age of technology... i think that anyone who would buy this CD would definitely have a computer. It also opens up the avenue of adding some Multimedia content. And the huge track count may also give incentive for folks to purchase it.
Something to consider...
