more improvised ambient music - Crystal Dreams Episode #3

Post by darkvortex » Mon Apr 20, 2009 2:30 am

Here's this weeks offering. It's a little more music centric rather than focusing on the ambient sounds:

Ableton Simpler was my tool of choice this time around (Dimension Pro got a week off) and I was very happy with the results I got. The first piano type sound is a sample from my beloved Roland Alpha Juno 1 and the lead instrument towards the end of the track is a tweaked version of "Init Saw" from one of the Live 5 packs.

Enjoy.

Cheers :)

I enjoyed that.
You have created a really nice atmosphere with so few and simple sounds.
Some might think it too long and repititive but I have a high tolerance for repetitive :)

Thanks for sharing.

Loved it! I liked it so much I looked for a link in your sig for more music. When I saw there wasn't one, I checked out your profile for a link and found one. That's the first time I've ever done that. I'm getting serious Vangelis and Michel Jarre vibes.

If I might make a critique (I won't call it a suggestion because you can do what you want with your own stuff): A lot of your sounds sound a bit "out of the box." Making them a bit more unique would strengthen them in my opinion (there I go, making a suggestion). I'm a hypocrite though, because I just use the presets for my music (with tweeks here and there). Maybe it's because you have a vintage sound, but I can't help feeling like I've heard a lot of those sounds before. Then again, people have been playing guitars, trumpets, drums, banjos, mouth harps, etc. for decades with no change in sound and nobody complains about them. Maybe it's just a hang-up with electronic stuff.

I'm kinda glad to hear you say that it was repetitive because that ongoing hypnotic thing is heading in the right direction for ambient music (in my opinion, of course). And funny you should mention the length because someone else made the comment that it wasn't actually long enough, lol! Will definitely take that on board tho.

Thnx for your feedback.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. Plus I appreciate you taking the time to look me up. I was a little bit behind in getting myself set up here but hopefully that's sorted now. And yes... there's a definite JMJ and Vangelis "bias" - perhaps with a hint of classic Doctor Who :D

That's a fair comment about presets. Finding the right balance between something familiar to listeners and something innovative is proving to be a bit of a challenge. Especially with a genre like ambient where, in many ways, you're trying not to stand out. I'll keep that in mind when working on next weeks episode where I really want to dig deep into the vintage analog sounds. I may have a mountain to climb :)

Thnx for your feedback.
