Name one company that has done that.
Image-Line (FL Studio) is known for this.
Not only that, but they also offer discounts to owners of FLS who wants to buy more plugins.

I can care less for Operator (I already have Sytrus and Wusikstation for FM synths) but I love Live and see absolutely nothing wrong with them releasing a product as a demo.

FLS users have seen this for a very long time. Every plugin they sell come bundled in the installation, but you have to unlock them to be able to save them as part of projects.

The XXL deal they offer is *incredible* value for money.

Maybe that is my only wish here - that existing users could get a discount on Operator - but it's been only a few days, who knows what will happen.

Live has changed the way I write music - seeing Ableton try an old marketing trick (bundling demos) is not surprising, nor should it be taken as an offense as a lot of people seem to do. :!:

i think cubase just released a new reverb for sx3 for FREE.
Reason 2.5 was FREE for 2.0 owners .
im not expecting to get every new release for free, but i think after a few months of paying 129 bucks for version 4 to pay 150 for a new synth is a lot of money. Operator is a great synth, but is nothing comparared to other synths you can get for the same money or cheaper...take a look at LINPLUG web, URS with zebra and filterscape, Reaktor Session( i got it for 150 in nyc )....Vanguard, and the list goes on and on.....i personally think (i know what the market of plugs in is) that Operator adition its worth no more than 29 bucks top. and even for that price i wouldnt buy it either, i have so many great plugs in already.
what i would pay for is.....support for G5 double processor
Freeze function
multiple screens support.
mackie control support.
improved dj tools(pitch bend,etc)
Rex compability.
apple loops compability.
sounds fair to me
well said my friend.100% right on.you should email this to ableton

Ok well ... .. name 25 then!

What 25 companies ever give away major free software upgrades between whole number revisions!

See? Exactly my point!

Re other companies releasing new versions

Post by Liam » Sun Jan 23, 2005 2:32 am

Yes, Imageline FL Studio does this - free updates if you buy the online software. Check their site for details.

Version 5 was released recently and offers many new interesting options.

They offer a softsynth called SYTRUS which is a 6 operator FM synth (with FX too) for $69 This has many additional features.

It is also available as a VSTi softsynth. You get both options when purchasing.

This is really Ableton's benchmark I believe for pricing their Operator. $149 is not going to create enough customer loyaly.

Image Line, the makers of FL Studio. FL STudio 5 has lots of new features plus new synths, like the FPC.

What can I say? I'm disappointed too.

I don't know if I''l buy Operator. But even if I don't, for me (and others?) it is a great tutorial on how a synth 'operates'.

With it's simple-to-understand interface, and a guided tutorial, I can now understand many synth basics that have troubled me before.

Using the Operator tut, I can understand signal routings, which I can translate to my other synths......you know, those other synths that assume you know what they're talking about in their manuals?

Hands on synth lesson, for free.

You're missing the point. There are a plethora of things Ableton could add to enahnce Live (that wouldn't be considered HUGE updates).

1) 0dB read-out in Session mixer faders
2) Mute in Arrange
3) Don't make me shift-click to move pointer in arrange (we liked it the way it was in Live v1, v2, and v3)
4) Surface controller support for mackie hui or mackie control
5) internal buffer for proper audio compensation for vst/au fx
6) a better reverb
7) MTC
8] support hyperthreading and altivec
9) better quality warping
10) read the feature request threads. I don't see "come up with ways to spend more money on another synth" as one of the top requests

Ableton has veered their focus away from how they can improve their daw to "how can we make more money without pissing people off?" but $150 is too much. it's not attractive and it has created huge seperation in the ableton culture. bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad move on ableton's part. the synth is ok, but they over hyped allt hat work they put into it versus the final result. it may bve a big personal accomplishment for henke, but not in the world of soft synths.

not to mention, operator is a CPU hog. it would be one thing if it was really efficient because it's native, but come on.

Answer this:

What company releases a major new component to software between major revisions ... for free.

By "major component" I mean: significant whole NEW feature set and functionality

By "major revision" I mean: brand new, WHOLE number release

Name one company that has done that.

OK, I haven't been too vocal about this whole thing yet, but seriously...

While the fact that everyone has their panties all in a bunch is quite a testament to how emotionally attatched people have become to this incredibly innovative company, everyone just needs to shut the fuck up, have a big glass of water, a wank and maybe even some naptime and get over thinking that they can run this company any better than it's being run and get back to making, or at least talking about making, music.

Until I see someone start and run a company that even half compares to the success, innovation and customer appretiation that the Abe's have somehow managed, you'll all just sound like a bunch of spoiled little girls crying about how their brand new training bra is pink when mommy knows your favorite color is purple.

There... I'm done. I'm going to go write a track, who's with me?
